In 1941 the Germans came. Three-year-old Igor Dmitrievich already felt how terrible the word "war" was.

In 1955, the future Marshal of the Russian Federation graduated with a gold medal and entered the Moscow State University. But from childhood he dreamed of becoming a sailor. After collecting the documents, he moved to Leningrad to enter the naval school. When Igor Dmitrievich was in the second year, the profile of his faculty was changed to engineering and transferred to Sevastopol. Military career Sergeeva I.D.

All the titles in the Soviet Army that existed at that time were appropriated to Sergeev while he was serving. And after he graduated from the academy of the General Staff, he was appointed to the post of chief of the staff association of the Vinnitsa region. Then there were the posts of the chief of the operational control of the General Staff of the Missile Forces, the first deputy. Chief of staff, deputy. Commander-in-chief of missile forces (combat training).

In 1992, Sergeev became head of the Strategic Missile Forces. This was a very difficult period in his life, since, despite the fact that the USSR no longer existed, the missile forces in all the republics of the former great power demanded control. Their reorganization (the movement of missile technology, nuclear munitions, fuel) took a lot of time and strength of all officers, but nevertheless they retained combat capability and became the basis for the modern Russian Army. Great in that merit and Sergeev Igor Dmitrievich.

Last days

Igor Dmitrievich liked to perform in front of the honors pupils of Nakhimov and Suvorov schools, which they collected for the delivery of nominal scholarships. In August 2006, he spoke to them for the last time. Then already he was very sick, moved with difficulty and spoke only in a whisper. Young fighters were warned that the only Russian marshal came to the meeting. And how he came to them - without a stick, with a smile on his face. He said a few words so that everyone thought that he was just hoarse a little.

The same year, on November 10, Sergey Dmitrievich Sergeev was gone. In memory of him, the school where he studied, was named after him, opened a museum and a memorial plaque and in 2008 erected a monument to this great man.
