The general practitioner is another name for the specialization of a family doctor. Reviews about the activities of such doctors are usually positive. The family doctor has a multidisciplinary specialization. His competence includes the diagnosis and treatment of most common diseases. For Russia, a family doctor is a relatively new concept. We used this term only in the early 90s, but in the United States this specialization was officially recognized as far back as 1969. To date, family medicine is the foundation of the healthcare system of such developed countries as the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom.

In our country to build a health care system on the principles of family medicine was decided back in 1992. However, until now, only a private paid clinic can afford to have a highly qualified specialist in family medicine in Russia . A family doctor in ordinary municipal polyclinics is still very rare.

Despite this, Russians are increasingly turning to such specialists as a family doctor. Reviews of friends, neighbors, and just acquaintances about doctors who become friends in a short time are the best ads for family medicine. General practitioners are looking for an individual approach to each patient. Often they observe him from the day of his birth and throughout his life, know his parents, and, accordingly, the history of illnesses of the next of kin, which is not superfluous in diagnosis.

A family doctor, as a rule, participates in all medical research that is conducted with his patient by other (narrow-profile) specialists. He on the phone or personally always controls such processes and does not allow his colleagues to prescribe unnecessary examinations or treatment that can damage his patient.

Primary examination, routine diagnostics, complex therapy, medical procedures of a different nature and even pregnancy monitoring are far from a complete list of the functions performed by the family doctor. The comments of women, who are supervised by a family doctor during pregnancy, are also very positive. After all, if the pregnancy is normal, it is more pleasant to meet with the doctor at home, so to speak, over a cup of tea than in a sterile office of a gynecologist in a polyclinic.

By the way, most often paid clinics in Moscow practice the examination of patients by family doctors at home. Of course, if it, examination, does not require any complicated medical manipulation. In a home environment between the patient and the doctor, it is easy to establish a warm and trusting relationship, which is especially important for children.
