Epigastric region, causes of pain

The epigastric region is the zone immediately below the xiphoid process, which corresponds to the projection of the stomach on the anterior cavity of the peritoneum.

Mentally drawn line along the bottom edge of the rib separates the abdomen from what is higher - to the ribs - a triangle is obtained, which is the epigastric region or the epigastrium.

Causes of epigastric pain

  • Defeat of the diaphragm, duodenum, esophagus, etc., that is, everything that relates to the gastrointestinal tract, as well as with right-sided pneumonia, right-sided pyelonephritis, heart disease, pleura and pericardium, reflux;
  • Hiatal epigastric hernia, fundal gastritis, pancreatitis, spleen lesion, constipation, as well as left-sided pyelonephritis, urolithiasis, left-sided pneumonia;
  • Acute appendicitis, which causes pain in the beginning around the navel or epigastrium, and then move to the right side (iliac region);
  • Acute pancreatitis manifests itself by a sharp constant pain in the epigastrium, and then assumes a shingling character;
  • With myocardial infarction the epigastric region sometimes hurts (gastralgic form), the symptoms are similar to the perforation of the ulcer, and the pain is acute. Pulse at this frequent, there is an arrhythmia and lowering of arterial pressure;
  • Pneumonia and pleurisy - with pain intensified by coughing and breathing, superficial breathing, rales and noises. Epigastric region is painful and tense;
  • Purulent peritonitis, developed as a result of perforation of the ulcer;
  • Perforation of the stomach ulcer;
  • Epigastric region is sensitive in acute duodenitis, nausea, vomiting and other manifestations are observed;
  • Pyloroduodenal stenosis. Observed after eating, arises from heartburn, sometimes vomiting;
  • Hepatic colic is acute, cramping, characterized by pain, which is quickly stopped by antispasmodics;
  • The epigastric region hurts with many infectious diseases. Suddenly, abdominal pain, nausea, repeated vomiting, diarrhea, suggest that this is most likely food-borne disease (PTI). However, with gastrointestinal disorders there are phenomena of intoxication: headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, there is chills and weakness, there is a brief loss of consciousness and convulsions;
  • Pains in epigastrium are characteristic for food toxic infections, can be a symptom of salmonellosis and acute dysentery, which proceeds similarly to food poisoning, with the initial period of viral hepatitis, leptospirosis;
  • Pain in the epigastrium is sometimes the first sign, even before the hemorrhagic syndrome, the Crimean fever, in which there is often a moderate chills and vomiting;
  • With typhus fever affects the solar plexus, which is also accompanied by pain in this area.

Thus, if you feel pain in the epigastric region, and it gives you discomfort, while at home, painkillers do not help - call for emergency help. Many diseases are manifested by such a symptom, even threatening human life.

To address it is necessary to gastroenterologists and surgeons who will spend inspection and will define the diagnosis.
