Weaving from paper: a master class for beginners (photo)

Wicker items were popular at all times. Only previously used birch bark, vine, willow rods, and now they are replaced with an ordinary newspaper, magazine and office sheets. Such products are covered with stain, varnish, thereby creating an imitation of the structure of the tree.

This is the popular weaving of paper. A master class for beginners will be devoted to the basics of this handicraft, as the information on it is scattered in pieces by various sources, and all the lessons for weaving crafts are designed for people with basic knowledge.

Material

For the weaving will need paper, knitting needles, paint, stain, lacquer, cardboard, glue, clerical knife. For work newspapers, magazines, office and fax paper are suitable. The softer tubes are obtained from the newspaper, and the thinner, elastic - from the magazines and office paper.

Note: from one newspaper spread, four tubes should appear (the width of the segment is not more than 7-12 centimeters). From office paper, cut narrow strips 2-3 cm wide.

Experiment with different types of material, then get an extraordinary weaving of paper. Crafts in this technique can create a wide variety - starting from trays and panels and ending with animal figures and dishes.

Masters use knitting needles of different thicknesses. The selection depends on the craft: for example, the newspaper needs a No. 2-3 needle, and for office paper it is a stocking. For the basis of crafting, twist the thick tubes, and for the braid - soft.

Paint, stain select on a water-based basis (on alcohol the agent dries quickly, but makes the tube fragile). Paint the paint with PVA glue (2: 1 or 3: 1). Dye or the product after work or workpiece before the start of the creative process. But the finished product is always greased with glue, leave to dry. Only at the last stage it is varnished. Cardboard is used to create a finished bottom or a container of the desired shape.

How to harvest tubules:

  • Unfold the newspaper in length;
  • Fold in half;
  • Cut with a knife along the entire length;
  • Again add the resulting segments;
  • Cut off the entire length;
  • Sort into a separate stack of stripes with a white edge (edging at the newspaper at the beginning and end of the sheet);
  • Put the sheet in front of you;
  • Take a 2-mm needle;
  • Put the needle at an angle of 30-45 degrees in comparison with the sheet;
  • Wrap the corner of the paper;
  • Gently twist the spoke, holding the edge of the tube with your hands;
  • The remaining corner is greased with glue and glued.

The tubes should not be soft or rigid, ideally an "average" weave made of paper is obtained. For beginners, a lot of video tutorials are created on twist, but without practice they are useless. For example, for blinds and panels of the master, hard sticks are specially twisted, for decorative miniature objects, thin tubes are made, where the width of the strip may be less than the traditional seven centimeters. You need to experiment to find your own thickness of tubes.

Note that when cutting with a knife, there are jags that prevent proper twisting. Therefore, before the work, carry out research work: try to cut two sheets of the newspaper into transverse and longitudinal strips, determining how to get less jags. It is from a segment with smaller jags that the tube rolls without problems.

Weaving from paper: step by step instruction on twisting and painting

When twisting the rods, one end should be wider and the other end already. So when weaving crafts through the insertion is an extension, that is, the narrow corner is inserted into the wide one. If the ends are the same, then one edge is flattened, squeezed and inserted.

Many masters when building up do without glue, just insert a stick three centimeters into the depths of the other. Other pros drip a drop of glue into the tube with a wide end, and a narrow stick is advanced by three centimeters.

There is another secret, how to make the twisting pass faster, and the weave was soft. Before work, the newspaper tubes are laid out in a row and passed through them with a rolling pin. It turns out that every master has his own wickerwork from paper.

  • The first way. Sheets paint before work, then dry, cut into strips and twist into tubes.
  • The second way. Turn the sticks, then each individually paint with a brush. Suitable for products if you need an unusual pattern.
  • The third way. Do crafts, then decorate the wicker or chaotic brush.

Methods of mass painting

  • The fourth way. Take the pipe, wrap one end with a plug. Pour stain. Take a bundle of tubes (so that it can fit freely into the pipe), dip one stain first into the stain, then the other. If the middle is not stained, then pat this area with a brush. In the pipe, top up the stain. In this case, time is saved, but you need to work on the street. Do not dip the tubes twice in the stain, as they soften.
  • The fifth way. Take a wide pipe, closed from both sides with plugs. Cut up to make a tray. The length of the pipe depends on the size of the rods. Fill the tray with paint. In the mosquito net, put a bundle of sticks, dipping several times in the solution. You drain the excess, hang it on the rope.

For paint you can use water emulsion, pigments, food colors for eggs. If you get an unsuccessful color, still continue the weaving of paper. The basket, for example, can have any color, just complicate the weaving or resort to decoupage.

Secrets to working with tubules

Note that the color becomes lighter after drying. Combining with other chopsticks, create the desired pattern or finished product draw the desired shade. Do not dry until completely dry. A little wet wands wrap the package so that both ends are outside. In the winter they can be stored in the cold.

In operation, the rods must be flexible, and after painting they become hard and brittle. Ideally, immediately after painting the tubes, weaving should start from paper. The basket, drawers, and utensils can be made from dry, dyed tubes if you use a sprayer on all sides to spray the middle of the sticks before you work.

Wrap them in a wet cloth (ends on the outside) or put them in a bag. You immediately prepare a large number of tubes so that you do not get distracted by twisting during work.

When weaving we take an even and odd number of tubes. It is on the side where an odd number of sticks, work begins. The "odd" tube flies all the others. As soon as its length ends, build up a new wand.

Types of weaving

On the stock material finished, now consider the weaving of paper. A master class for beginners in his technique is given below.

  • Simple ordinary weaving. A braid tube, like a snake, bypass each wand base. That is, it covers the foundation, then it hides behind it. If you need to return, the weaving goes the same way, but in the opposite direction.
  • Simple weaving in rows. The pattern changes after several rows. That is, take one stick, go through a simple weaving. The next tube falls just like the first one. So continue drawing several times. Then move the pattern, that is, where the base is braided, remains free, and the next one is braided as many times as in the first pattern.
  • Simple diagonal weave. Each tube begins with a new base sticks diagonally. Obtained oblique (oblique) pattern.
  • Simple diagonal braiding in rows. Just like in the horizontal pattern, weave a few sticks, and the new circle is displaced according to the drawing.

Varieties of weaving

Continue to consider the weaving of paper (master class to create patterns):

  • Layered weaving. It looks like a braid in rows, only work goes with several tubes at the same time. That is, you immediately two rods braid the base of the four pillars, leave the sticks in a raised position. Go to the new row of two sticks. So repeat several times, then go back to the original series.
  • Orderly weaving. Each tube is conducted by ordinary weaving until its end. A new stick is laid at the end of the first without building up. Due to the thin and thick ends of the tube creates a beautiful diagonal line.
  • Square netting. Tubules braid the series through two bases until the pattern reaches the size of the distance between the posts.
  • Openwork weaving. The work is done in one of the techniques, and at some interval the cells are skipped, leaving the racks open. Distinguish patterns with an asterisk, a column, a diamond, a wedge.

Techniques and Secrets of Weaving

For any pattern to hold, it is braided with a string or a pigtail. Let us consider in detail the "protective" weaving of paper (we describe it step by step in the example of a basket).

  • Rope weaving. The tube flies not only the posts, but also the next stick. For example, work comes with four elements. All tubes are laid under their own foundation. Next, the first stick passes between the third and fourth pillars, braiding all four tubes. With subsequent elements work is similar. It turns out a kind of pigtail.
  • Weaving with a pigtail. Overhead braids are braided separately, then glued to the product. Edge braids are created from racks (not intertwining tubules).

Note that weaving the tubes begins with thick ends from left to right. To get the given shape, the racks are pinched to the desired object (vase, bucket, box, etc.). The finished product is abundantly lubricated with PVA glue (with or without paint), "put on" for the desired shape, and dry. Then, when painting and varnishing, the tubular product will be beautiful and durable.

Making a basket

Beginners should start with something simple (for example, blinds, frames, panels) in order to train their hand in twisting the tubes and their simple interlacing. Then you can go to a complex weaving of paper (horseshoe, heart, casket, bell). Consider a master class on weaving a simple basket without a lid and a pen.

To save labor on weaving baskets, use a cardboard bottom. To do this, take an object of the desired shape, circle the bottom on a dense cardboard. Cut out the two parts. Immediately they will decorate (cover with wallpaper, paint or apply decoupage).

On the bottom half along the edge, attach a self-adhesive film. Now glue on it newspaper tubes. The distance between them should not be more than 2-3 centimeters. This is the basic rule of such needlework (we mean the weaving of paper).

Stand for pens, photo frame, hat - any piece must have a distance between the racks not more than three centimeters. The fact is that a larger gap between them leads to looseness and fragility of the product.

Continuation of basket weaving

Further on to the bottom with the tubes, apply PVA glue, cover with the second bottom, put the load on top and leave for the night. Now two rows of "rope", a simple intertwining of racks. After that, put the shape on the bottom, on which you will weave, with the load (the cargo is needed for fixing the bottom during weaving). If we immediately start weaving the walls from the cardboard bottom, then the basket will have holes that need to be decorated.

Raise the tubes up, continue to work until you reach the desired height. Further you fly upwards or separately plait a pigtail, having pasted it to basis. By the same principle, weave from paper caskets with a lid.

There is another way of weaving a rectangular bottom with ribbons and newspaper tubes. This looks like working with a paper strip. Only in this case, take not one tube, but two or three for one unit. For example, at the bottom are four groups of sticks. Then on them put three sticks across.

On top stack four groups of tubes so that their ends are between the bottom. Now all the rows are braided with tape or a soft stick. Then again lay a cross-section of rods, braiding them with a ribbon. Using colored tubes, you can get the original pattern.

The bottom in this case turns out to be volumetric, as if double. Then, raise all the joints, braid them with a "rope", smoothly passing to the walls of the product. For trays, this is the optimal weaving of paper. A step-by-step photo on weaving a square basket clearly shows the essence of the work. Cook pipes and create.

If you have never worked with newspaper tubes, start with simple views. For example, blinds. To do this, simply twist the thick sticks along the length of one half of the window. Tie a double knot on both sides of each wand, retreating from the edges of 3-4 cm. In the process of work, the "seams" are smeared with glue.

From above, fix the ring for the curtains (blinds will be attached to them) and a loop where you can put the rolled roll if necessary. Finished product, paint, varnish. Now you can try simple weaving on small souvenirs and go to the baskets.
