The ZMZ-405 family of gasoline engines can be rightfully considered one of the pride of their manufacturer - Zavolzhsky Motor Plant OJSC. Design

The engine of the Zavolzhsky Plant is a four-cycle automobile power unit with in-line arrangement of cylinders and pistons. Fuel supply to the inlet channels of the cylinders and ignition is controlled by an electronic system. The engine is equipped with an external fuel-air mixture system. The reciprocating motion of the pistons is converted into rotary by means of one common for all pistons of the crankshaft. Two overhead camshafts. The block of cylinders and a cranked shaft

The upgraded block of the 405th engine is made of high-strength cast iron, which, combined with the use of high-precision metal processing methods, made it possible to significantly reduce the deformation of the cylinders during operation. In the block of the old sample, slots of 2 mm between the cylinders for the cooling system were provided. For the engine block ZMZ-405, such slots are not provided. In addition, the threaded manholes for bolts for securing the cylinder head were enlarged.

The crankshaft is structurally identical to the engine ZMZ-406, but is cast from high-quality and more durable cast iron. The design is full-bearing with two counterweights for each crank. Improvements have made it possible to improve resistance to centrifugal forces and bending moments.

Engine Features

Improvement of cylinder head

The engineers of the production plant improved the thermal insulation of ZMZ-405. For a more reliable tightness of the cylinder block, instead of a reinforced cylinder head gasket from a single-layer, asbestos-free material, a two-layer metal was used. The renewal of the material and the use of new structural elements, in particular zigzag springs, ensured better sealing of the gas joint and channels of the lubrication system, and also improved the cooling process. The thickness of the new design is reduced by a factor of three with respect to the original soft padding with a metal edging and is only 0.5 millimeters. This made it possible to minimize the need to tighten the bolts in comparison with the previous parts, which in turn makes it possible to reduce the deformation of the cylinders during operation.

In the engines of the 405 series "Euro-3" for auxiliary units, an extended drive belt and a self-retracting roller are used. The estimated lifetime of the roller is 150 thousand kilometers. In the engines of the 405 series, the consumption of oil and fuel is significantly reduced. These engines meet world standards and allowable toxicity standards, and are also characterized by increased reliability.
