Communication in nursing as a necessary element of therapy

Caring for the patients of clinics and hospitals is extremely difficult, but such a necessary thing. The demand for junior medical staff is constantly growing, especially in Western Europe and the United States. But at the same time, the requirements for qualification and personal qualities are also increasing. For example, knowledge of a foreign language and the successful passage of a character test are increasingly required. What role does communication play in nursing? Why is it so important that special refresher courses are created that give special attention to this aspect?

Contacting another person

The doctor depends on the choice of appropriate therapy, the appointment of procedures, medicines. But the junior medical staff carries out his instruction. It is he who is in constant contact with the patient. Therefore, we can safely say that communication in nursing is an integral part of the treatment process. What is its essence? This is the interaction of two people who are interested in the common goal - recovery of the patient. The main factor that helps to exchange information about the patient's health and perform actions (procedures - injections, droppers, physiotherapy, etc.) is exactly communication.

Nursing is a profession based on help, on visual, tactile, verbal contact. The doctor can prescribe medications or procedures, relying only on the analysis and diagnosis data. The sister must "put them into practice", that is, perform, touching the patient, paying attention to its actual state (temperature, appetite, edema, etc.). Without "feedback", without contact with the patient, who can report how he feels (so that the doctor can make adjustments), they may not bring the expected effect.

Stages of communication

No matter how banal this may seem, communication in nursing is first of all tactile and eye contact. Touch, look mean a lot. Often, only on the basis of these qualities, patients judge the professionalism and character of the nurse. About one they say "she has an easy hand and a kind heart", the other is afraid and avoided. Even if formally verbal communication in the nursing business at the verbal level occurs politely and correctly, patients always feel by touch, whether the person feels sympathy for them, or only coldly fulfills their duties. After a good eye contact is established (and this is necessary, listening, looking at the patient in the eye, not to avoid looking), you can adjust the following levels. This is especially important for children. They should have full confidence in the treating staff, especially the younger one. Otherwise, fear, dislike and stress will have a negative effect on the recovery process. These issues are addressed by such a field of philosophy as bioethics. Communication in the nursing business, she considers in a broader context. It affects such topics as altruism and personal distance, boundaries and mutual assistance.

Therapeutic value

It's not a secret that the word and the touch mean - especially for an impressionable, sensitive person - very much. They can stimulate and encourage, and can oppress and frighten. Communication in nursing is a necessary discipline, which should teach junior medical personnel to involve all sense organs, all the patient's mechanisms aimed at improving health. After all, sometimes a friendly "good morning" so that a person feels the desire to live, that the mood is uplifted and wants to fight the disease.
