Boris and Tikhon: the comparative characteristics of these heroes

Comedy "Thunderstorm" - this is one of the most famous works of Russian playwright A. Ostrovsky. The idea, the characters of the work can be studied forever. Images of the characters "Thunderstorms" are very noteworthy.

The problems of the play "The Thunderstorm"

All the characters of the drama "Thunderstorm" can be divided into 2 groups: representatives of the older and younger generations. The older one represents Kabaniha and Dikaya. They are representatives of the patriarchal world, where egoism and poverty rule. Other characters suffer from the tyranny of Kabaniha and Wild. This is primarily Varvara, Katerina, Boris and Tikhon. Comparative characterization of the characters shows that all the heroes have reconciled with their fate, and only Katerina is not able to go against conscience and her desires.
The whole work "Storm" is dedicated to the story of the main character Catherine. She is one of the participants in the love triangle. Katerina has to choose between two men, and these men are Boris and Tikhon. Comparative characteristics of these characters will help to understand in detail the behavior of the characters in the play.

The Fate of Boris

Before you disassemble the character of Boris, you need to get acquainted with its history.

Boris is not a native of Kalinov. He gets there at the behest of his parents. Boris was supposed to inherit, which for the time being manages the Wild. For good behavior and obedience Wild must give the inheritance to Boris, but readers understand that because of Wildness's greed this will never happen. Therefore, Boris has to stay in Kalinov and live there according to the rules established by Wild and Kabanikha.

The fate of Tikhon

Among all the characters A. Ostrovsky singles out two heroes, two men are Boris and Tikhon. Comparative characteristics of these characters can say a lot.

Tikhon depends on the Kabaniha - his mother. He has to obey everything in everything. Kabanikh does not hesitate to get into his son's private life, dictating how he should treat his wife. His sister-in-law Katerina Kabanikh literally lives from the light. To Katerina Kabaniha is constantly finding fault.

One day Tikhon is forced to leave for another city for several days. The reader clearly sees how pleased he is to be alone and to show his independence.

Common between Boris and Tikhon

So, we have two characters - it's Boris and Tikhon. Comparative characteristics of these heroes are impossible without an analysis of their way of life. So, both characters live with tyrants, both heroes are compelled to submit to another's will. Both heroes lack independence. Both heroes love Catherine.

At the end of the play, both suffer greatly after Catherine's death. Tikhon remains alone, with his mother, and Boris Dika orders to leave Kalinov. Of course, the inheritance to him after the incident with Caterina just do not see.

Boris and Tikhon: differences

The differences between Boris and Tikhon are greater than those of the general. So, Boris and Tikhon are a comparative characteristic. The table, attached below, will help to systematize knowledge about these heroes.

Boris Tikhon
Attitude towards Kateryna Boris is ready for anything. He risks his reputation, the reputation of Katerina - a married woman. His love is passionate, open and emotional. Tikhon loves Katerina, but the reader sometimes questions this: if he loves her, why does not he defend against Kabanikhi's attacks? Why does not she feel her suffering?
Relations with other characters in the play Boris acts under the cover of Varvara. Night Kalinov is a time when all the young people go out on the street with songs and romantic moods. Tikhon is treated well, but little has been said about his relations with other characters. The only thing that is remarkable is his relationship with his mother. He loves her in some way and tries to respect him, but on the other hand he feels her wrong.

Such are Boris and Tikhon. Comparative characteristics of the characters, shown above in the table, are succinct and capacious. It is worth noting that mostly readers sympathize with Boris, rather than Tikhon.

The main idea of the play "Thunderstorm"

Characteristic of Boris and Tikhon says that two men loved Katerina. However, neither one nor the other could not save her. Katerina rushed from the cliff into the river, no one stopped her. It was Boris and Tikhon, the comparative characteristics of which were cited above, that were to save her, and they had to rebel against the power of the Kalinin tyrants. However, they did not succeed, and Katerina's lifeless body was taken out of the river.

Kalinov is a town that lives by its own rules. Dobroliubov called Katerina "a ray of light in the dark kingdom," and this is indeed so. Katerina could not change her destiny, but, perhaps, she will change the life of the whole city. Her death is the first catastrophe that broke the patriarchal way of the family. Kabanikha and Dikoy feel that the young people are getting out of their power, which means that changes are coming.

Thus, A. Ostrovsky was able to show not just a family tragedy. Before us is the tragedy of a whole city, dying in the despotism of the Wild and the Kabanikha. Kalinov is not a fictional city, but there are a lot of such "Kalinovs" in the whole of Russia.
