Gum retraction: indications for the procedure and methods

Healthy teeth are needed not only for a beautiful smile, but also for the normal functioning of the stomach. They need not only to be treated, but also to bleach, and in some cases also to prosthetics. Naturally, before each of these procedures, the oral cavity should be prepared. For this, the gingival retraction is used.

What is the procedure?

This is a specific removal of soft tissue from the teeth using certain techniques. Gingival retraction is a temporary phenomenon. The procedure is carried out according to the doctor's testimony. After the treatment, the tissues return to their place.

However, not everyone can use this method. To resort to retraction or not, the doctor decides. The cost of the procedure is on average 200 rubles. However, it is important to consider which methods of gum treatment exist.

Indications for use

Retraction of the gum is a widespread phenomenon in orthopedics. The procedure is not complicated, however, as already mentioned, not all patients are allowed. It is shown in such cases:

  • If it is necessary to protect the gum from injuries during the treatment of the teeth, as well as the gingival fluid.
  • For more effective removal of plaque and tartar from the enamel.
  • If necessary, treatment of cervical tooth pathologies (caries).
  • With too much growth of soft tissues.
  • For prosthetics (when removing the impression). This method allows you to make the design more accurate and accurate.
  • If necessary, eliminate gingival bleeding.

In principle, this procedure is not needed anywhere else.

Surgical method

It is used infrequently. It is necessary to eliminate the excessive amount of soft tissue in case of its abnormal growth. Such an intervention is performed using local anesthesia.

To work surgeons use either a laser or a dental scalpel. The first method is less traumatic and safer.

Chemical method

Such a gum retraction is considered safe and effective. For the procedure, special pastes, gels or liquid solutions are used, which are applied with a brush.

The agent should be applied to the soft tissue itself. Further, it penetrates between the teeth and the gum, slightly pushing it away. After completion of the chemical, soft tissues return to their place.

However, this method of processing has some drawbacks. For example, gels work only 5 minutes, so they will not work for treatment - too little time. Therefore, more often such methods are used to remove the impression for the prosthesis.

In addition, the composition of pastes, which produced a retraction of the gums, can include adrenaline. This drug is strong enough and is not recommended for dental use for those patients who suffer from heart disease, hypertension.

In addition, some drugs can stain dental tissues in a different color, so for aesthetic dentistry such a method is undesirable.

Mechanical method

Such a retraction of the gum is made using metal staples or a special thread. It can be knitted (in the form of a tube), cotton and anti-allergic (without impregnation).

This method is the most common, however, and it has some drawbacks:

  • Possible injury to soft tissues.
  • The thread elements fall into the restoration process.
  • Not very high-quality protection of the marginal gingiva during the preparation of the crowns for fitting the prosthesis.

Features of using a retraction thread

Retraction of the gum floss is performed according to the following scheme:

  1. To begin with, the doctor must measure the depth of the dentogingival sulcus. This will make it possible to calculate how deep the thread is to be installed.
  2. Further the necessary place needs to be treated with an anesthetic.
  3. Now the thread must be soaked with a special solution that has the qualities necessary in each case: hemostatic, analgesic, antiseptic.
  4. Setting the thread to the specified depth.
  5. Carrying out all necessary medical measures.
  6. Elimination of the thread.

Retraction of the gum floss (the maximum time of use is limited by the time of the treatment procedures) is carried out in several ways:

  • In one thread. This method is minimally traumatic. However, it can only be used if the gums are completely healthy. This procedure makes it possible to move soft tissue by 0.5 mm.
  • In two strands. This method is used if it is necessary to carry out a deeper impact. The doctor uses a pair of threads that have different thicknesses. This method is used, even if the gums are inflamed. It is most often used in orthopedics.

What drugs are used and what to do after the procedure?

Retraction of the gum floss (reviews about the procedure can be found different, but almost all agree that this procedure, although not very pleasant, but quite tolerable) is most often performed with the use of medicines and chemicals:

  1. "Epinephrine." This drug narrows the blood vessels, which makes it possible to reduce their volume. Threads impregnated with such a remedy can not be used by people with a sick heart.
  2. Ferrous sulphate. This substance has hemostatic and vasoconstrictive properties. However, it is not used to treat anterior teeth, since it has the ability to stain solid tissues.
  3. Aluminum sulphate. This product gives a water-repellent and astringent effect.
  4. Aluminum chloride. It is most often used if the gums are damaged or inflamed.
  5. Double aluminum sulphate. It is used if it is necessary for the thread to have an astringent, hemostatic and vasoconstrictive effect.
  6. Chloride of zinc. This substance also has a strong astringent effect.

If a dry thread is used, the dentist in the sinus can lay down such medicines to facilitate the work: Expasyl, Retrac, Retragel.

After the procedure, a healthy gum may become inflamed. That this does not happen, she needs a special care. For example, you can use anti-inflammatory healing gels Metrogil Denta, Kamistad, Dental.

People's remedies will not be superfluous for the prevention of complications. For example, it is permissible to rinse the oral cavity with broths of chamomile, oak bark, calendula. A good effect has therapeutic toothpaste. During the recovery period, you should not eat too cold or very hot food. This will bring unnecessary discomfort.

If the patient has serious complications, the doctor can prescribe antibiotics. As for the feedback, it is possible to draw a conclusion from them: the procedure is not very pleasant, but it helps to avoid many problems and speeds up the treatment process. Be healthy!
