Where is Brest? The city of Brest in the Middle Ages and now

Brest is a city with a tragic fate. For its long history, it collapsed many times. Nevertheless, the sights of this ancient city are annually visited by thousands of tourists. When was Brest founded? What attracts tourists to this city? And finally, where is Brest?

In the Middle Age

Even a person who is not versed in geography knows about where Brest is located. And this is despite the fact that in recent years there has been an indifference to the history of our own culture. Fortunately, filmmakers often turn to the military-patriotic theme. In 2010, the screens "The Brest Fortress" came out. Perhaps those who watched it know about where the city of Brest is located.

In the south-west of the territory occupied by modern Belarus, archaeologists have discovered traces of an ancient site of ancient settlement. Later, a city was formed here, which for centuries represented an object of internecine strife. This is not surprising. After all, where is Brest? It is located where the border between the Polish and Lithuanian possessions passed in the Middle Ages. The city was founded, according to official figures, in 1019.

In the XX century

Brest suffered from numerous wars that were fought on European lands as, perhaps, no other city. In order to at least briefly talk about all the devastations that he suffered, you'll have to write a few books, which, however, the researchers have already done. But those who are interested in the history of the Great Patriotic War and wish to understand the chronology of military events should first answer the question of where Brest is located.

And it is located 320 km from Minsk, at the very border with Poland. That is why the Great Patriotic War began with attempts to capture the Brest Fortress, which it was more difficult for the fascists to accomplish than they had originally intended.

Today this fortress is a symbol of the fortitude of a Soviet soldier. Here every year come not idle tourists, but those who cherish the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War.
