What is the WWW: the history of the creation of the World Wide Web

What is WWW? This question torments many people who have recently gained access to the Internet. But if you think about it, not every experienced computer user can accurately and fully answer this question. So what are the three mystical letters we type in the address bar of the browser in order to gain access to a particular site?

What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web or, as it is called in our country, the World Wide Web, is an expanded version of the abbreviation WWW. It is a unified network of information resources, communication between which is provided by telecommunications and is based on hypertext data representation. It would seem that now an enlightened person should become clear what the WWW is, but for ordinary people the above sounds at least strange.

Internet as a distributed information system

The first question, which should be understood in order to understand what the WWW is, is what is the network of information resources opening for us when we use the Internet. All the information that the World Wide Web can provide us is stored on a large number of special servers that are computers that are integrated into one network. The user who wants to receive this information accesses the server through a special browser program that allows viewing WWW documents. The interaction between the server and the browser occurs according to certain rules, which are laid out in the HTTP protocol.

What is hypertext?

The second question, which should be considered in order to fully understand the meaning of WWW - what is hypertext. The HTTP protocol allows you to work on the Internet only with the text information that is written in a special language - HTML. It, in turn, is a markup language. It is through this format of documents that it is possible to transfer data on the World Wide Web, since it not only transmits all the necessary information, but also displays it on the user's screen exactly as the author wanted to convey it.

If we talk in plain language, what is the WWW - we can say that this is the Internet. This will not be a mistake, because this abbreviation translates as the World Wide Web. It appeared in 1989, when scientist Tim Berners offered the world his innovative project. Since then, 15 years have passed, and now almost every house every day someone enters into the address line of the browser three magic letters WWW to get on their favorite resource.
