What does it mean "catching a ring"

It is believed that this old method was invented on the lower Volga, which, in general, is natural. After catching fish on the ring is effective only in places of strong and smooth flow and exclusively from the boat. This method is considered very catchy and unsporting, and therefore in some regions of Russia it is forbidden, although by the mechanism of fishing it is no different from fishing for spinning or fishing.
