What is a gas turbine engine?

To date, there are several different types of engines, which differ from each other in accordance with the principle of operation. One of them is a gas turbine engine. It is designed in such a way that, having adopted all the key advantages of gasoline and diesel piston engines, received a number of undeniable advantages.

The gas-turbine engine, whose operation principle consists in carrying fuel through a series of turbine blades, drives them with the help of expanding gas. It refers to internal combustion models. Gas turbine engines are divided into single- and double-shaft engines. Their efficiency is directly proportional to the combustion temperature of the fuel. The most elementary models are single-shaft models with a single turbine. Double-shafts are not only more difficult in the device, but also capable of withstanding heavy loads.

Typically, gas turbine engines are used in trucks, ships and locomotives. Experiments are underway to develop such mechanisms for cars.

Currently, there are a large number of models of such engines, many of which significantly exceed their predecessors of greater productivity, smaller dimensions, dimensions and weight. Also, the gas turbine engine is safer and neutral for the environment. It produces less noise and vibration, and also consumes much less fuel. These are the main advantages of a gas turbine engine.

With their hands, the first such mechanism was created by the Norwegian scientist Egidius Elling in 1903. Since then, no one has been working on it until the 1920, when, after the end of World War I, Dr. A. Griffith began to make changes to his design. And after the end of World War II, jet engines entered mass production as the most effective method of powering the aircraft.

At present, the gas turbine engine continues to be actively developed. It is most widely used in aircraft turbines, propelling its blades, and in military equipment.

It is gas turbine mechanisms that have given humanity a lot of modern opportunities. Without them, there would not have been transcontinental gas pumping and long-haul flights of large airliners. The gas turbine engine is capable of generating a huge amount of energy with minimal fuel costs. It represents the most complex technological construction among all that were developed in the past century.

So, the gas turbine engine is one of the most grandiose discoveries of the twentieth century, thanks to which mankind has got tremendous opportunities for improving technology. Particularly valuable contribution of this development is that it allows to save fuel resources and practically does not harm the environment, which is extremely important in our time of global environmental crises.
