Treatment of cheilitis

Formation of a red border on the mucosa or inflammation of the skin of the lips is a disease called cheilitis. The causes of its occurrence include trauma or burns to the lips, the formation of cracks due to weathering, and even a long stay in the open sun. In addition, inflamed lips can indicate the presence of infection in the body, fungus or herpes virus.

Treatment of cheilitis is selected individually, depending on the type of disease. The most common types are:

  • Eczematous;
  • Glandular;
  • Exfoliative;
  • Catarrhal.

The very name "cheilitis" implies the place of the formation of the inflammatory process, and the diagnosis can be a specific species. In practice, mainly observed eczematous or, as it is called, cheilitis allergic. In this case, the lips swell and become covered with a rash in the form of vesicles, and the patient experiences an acute burning sensation. The reason for its occurrence lies in the sensitivity of the mucous membrane or skin of the lips to any component of the toothpaste or cosmetic. Treatment of cheilitis in this case begins with the definition of the source of an allergic reaction, after which it must be completely excluded from everyday use. To eliminate inflammation corticosteroid ointments are prescribed in combination with antihistamines. There are more difficult situations in which the source of an allergy is a new denture. Then you have to completely remodel it, excepting the allergen, and repeat the operation. To avoid such difficulties, a qualified dentist carefully selects all materials and negotiates them with the patient.

Women should remember that the frequent use of lipstick clogs the pores. There is a high risk that, together with the particles of lipstick, an infection will enter, and this often leads to the development of an inflammatory process. Lips become dull, start to peel or crack. The development of infection is facilitated by a complex ecological situation, because in the modern world, people are usually surrounded by dust, emissions of factories and factories, exhaust gases, after all. Often the patient begins to breathe through the mouth, which further dehydrates the mucous membrane, and she becomes vulnerable, open to bacteria. And on the contour of the lips appears a red border, which without proper treatment is cracked or covered with blisters. Often cracks are formed in the corners of the lips. Such wounds are very painful and heal for a long time.

Halit: how to treat?

The specialist should conduct complex treatment of cheilitis. First, the patient should control his breathing, because the habit of breathing through the mouth must be eradicated. This is decisive, otherwise it will not be possible to completely restore the mucosa and ensure the speedy healing of wounds. The task of the dentist is to check the bite and correct the detected errors. Recently, myoterapy has been actively used, that is, massage of specific points on the human body, affecting the work of certain organs and muscles. In addition to the basic procedures, it is recommended to perform respiratory gymnastics.

Treatment of cheilitis in children requires a more careful approach. Before starting the above procedures, it is necessary to determine if the child has trouble breathing through the mouth. To do this, an elementary test is performed: it is put to the wall so that the heels, back and head touch its surface, and ask to breathe only with the nose. If a small patient does not feel dizzy, there is no pallor and cyanosis of the skin, then we can say that breathing through the mouth is just a habit to get rid of.
