The time zone of Greece and the complexity of calculating the time difference with the Russian Federation

Greece has long become more than popular with Russian tourists, as a country with an impeccable level of service and as a beach holiday destination. It is often called the cradle of our European civilization. Many historical and cultural sights have been preserved here. In addition, this country allows an unprecedentedly successful shopping. Here they go to the so-called fur coaches. Everyone can choose in this southern European country a corner for a cloudless vacation. Wealthy travelers choose the islands of Crete, Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu. Young people and couples are more attracted to mainland Greece. The time zone in which the country is located, you need to know. After all, you can get into a mess, being late for the bus or ferry, traveling around the local time.

So how should we translate the hands on the dial of the clock, arriving in Athens? What is the time zone in Greece? The country lies in the south of the Balkan Peninsula, embracing also almost two thousand islands, which, like a crumbling necklace, lie on four seas. Yes, a traveler arriving in Greece has an amazing opportunity to swim alternately in the Aegean, Ionian, Mediterranean and Cretan seas, and also in the Corinthian Gulf. And this is all - without leaving the limits of one country.

But the time, moving from place to place, you do not need to change, because the time zone of Greece, in contrast to the vast Russia, only one. It's called UTC + 02: 00. This means that in winter there are two hours more in this country than the dial of the Universal Time of our planet shows. It is calculated by the Greenwich meridian, which lies not far from London. From the end of October and until the last Sunday of March, Britain lives on this Universal Time. Its time zone is UTC 0.

And what about in the summer? At the end of March, Foggy Albion, as well as those EU countries that lie to the west of it, are moving to a time called GMT. According to the rules of the European Union, all its members also translate the arrows of their dials for an hour ahead. Thus, in the summer the time zone of Greece is called EET. This abbreviation stands for Eastern European time. On it, in addition to Greece, there are a number of other European countries: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Turkey.

But the time zone extends not only one continent. They cover huge areas stretching from the North Pole to the South Pole . Therefore, in winter, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria in Asia, and in Africa - Burundi, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, DR Congo, Lesotho, Libya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Swaziland and South Africa fall into the time zone of Greece. But these southern countries do not switch to summer time. All the year round they live in the time zone UTC + 02: 00.

So, let's summarize. Arriving in Athens from Kiev, you do not have any need to translate the arrows on your wristwatch. Winter and summer time in these two countries is the same. With Russia it is more difficult. The Kremlin, for one clear reason, abandoned the true winter time and introduced a permanent summer day for the entire country. And the time zone of Greece - EET (or as it is also called GMT + 2) - according to the rules of the EU, is changing. Therefore, the calculation of the difference in hours between Moscow and Athens depends on the season of the year. In summer it is minus one hour, and in winter - two.
