The secret of escaping prisoners from Alcatraz in 1962

Using a rubber raft made of 55 raincoats, three prisoners managed to escape from Alcatraz prison (Alcatraz). This happened on June 12, 1962. The fugitives left the fortress at night, but whether they survived - still remains a mystery. It is likely that the prisoners could simply carry away the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean. Otherwise, they had to sail to Angel Island.

According to the new computer simulation of the fortress, the fugitives could leave the building only at one time - around midnight. The results of the study were presented at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union, held in San Francisco.

Journey length of six months

Three robbers spent about six months preparing a plan for evacuation from prison. They expanded the ventilation holes, made life jackets and periscopes, and outlined the route of travel. On this foggy June night, the prisoners left fictitious heads molded from plaster in their beds to insure themselves against nightly checks. Only after that they began their journey to the shore - a nearby rock.

Guesses of scientists

The Dutch team of researchers developed a model for studying the effect of sea level rise in the bay. This led scientists to the conclusion that a hydraulic 3Di project can also help visualize a known prison. They reconstructed the hydrodynamic conditions of the bay, using old records that store information about tides and also created an imitation of the movement of the raft.

In particular, the researchers considered two scenarios: the worst, without rowing, which was ineffective, and the best, in which fugitives floated north at a speed of 25 centimeters per second.

The secret is revealed?

"We do not know exactly when and at what point the prisoners started their journey, so it was decided to release 50" boats "with a periodicity of 30 minutes in the range from 2000 to 0400, presumably suitable for evacuation from Alcatraz. This was done in order to understand where the raft will end up in the end. If the fugitives were at the 2300 point, then they definitely had no chance of survival, "one of the study authors noted.

Rolf Hut of Delft University of Technology said that if the criminals got into the boat in the morning, their ship could go north toward Berkeley, and south towards Auckland.

"But in both cases the journey would take a long time, which would undoubtedly lead to the death of prisoners from hypothermia. Or they would just be caught by the police, "he added.

Nevertheless, if the shoot started at 2300 around midnight, and the robbers sailed north, they probably landed in the Marin district and found themselves near the Golden Gate Bridge.
