Summary

The main character of the novel is Sergei Sukovaty. At the beginning of the narrative, he is nine years old. Father Seryozha is a gynecologist. Seryozha spends a lot of time on the street. Reviews about the work of Gorenstein are met with rather disapproval. Readers believe that the images in the book are indistinct, the characters are poorly spelled out. So, Belochka - young sweetheart Sergei - at a certain point completely disappears. After describing the frank scene, it no longer appears in the narrative. Sergei enters the medical school, but he does not manage to finish it. He is called to the service. In the provincial town, he spends about two years. By this time, his attitude towards women is becoming more even. The intimate life does not excite his imagination, but does not repel him as before. In the garrison, he makes an unhurried romance with a local library employee. Sergei works in the hospital, at leisure reads the works of great philosophers and meets this young woman. The love affair does not leave any traces in his soul. Is he capable of a deep feeling?

Caroline

It turns out, is capable. Upon his return to Moscow, Sergei enters the medical institute, converging with one of his classmates. Alex (this is the name of a new friend) introduces him to his family. And one day in the classmate's house Sergey meets Karolina, a ballerina from the Czech Republic. This woman speaks with a Czech accent. Her wrong Russian causes Sergei erotic fantasies. The hero of the novel begins to pursue the ballet dancer. He realizes that he has known true love.

At last his dream comes true. Caroline comes to him ... But after two hours left the apartment. And three days later Sergei receives a letter in which the girl writes that she does not like him, and their meeting will not happen again. Sergei is trying to commit suicide.

At the end of the novel, the author briefly describes the last years of Sergei. The hero of the work married, but did not like his wife. His character has not changed for the better. After his death, his wife did not grieve. Six months after the funeral, she married again. But before that she had gone through the documents and books of her deceased husband. Among them was a photo on which the young Seryozha was sitting next to a plump girl, the same Bela, who was so fond of listening to the fairy tale "Chok Chok".

Reviews about the book

The work is written in good literary language. Readers agree in this opinion. However, in most reviews of this book, there are indignations about the large number of epithets and metaphors that the author gives to male and female intimate parts of the body. As one of the readers put it, "the idea is transmitted vividly, but with an unpleasant aftertaste."
