The flag of Belgium as a state symbol

The flag of Belgium is unique and unique due to its size, which differ from the state symbols of other countries. On the territory of the Kingdom this banner is very revered, because it symbolizes victory in the struggle for independence. Civic flag

The civil flag of Belgium was adopted after the end of the revolution, in 1831. As a result, the Belgian Kingdom appeared, formed as a result of the detachment of the southern provinces from the Netherlands. The banner consists of three vertical bands (black, gold and red, if you count from the shaft), having the same width. Such a coloring was similar to the flag, under which the revolutionaries fought in 1798 in Brabant. It was then that the debut attempt was made to proclaim an independent state and complete liberation from the rule of Austria. The Belgian states were not able to survive for one year, but this fact had a significant impact on the further development of the region.

It should be noted that the Brabant banner is borrowed only in color. The stripes on it were horizontal (the top was red, in the middle - black, and from below - gold). The vertical placement was officially fixed on January 23, 1831, with the relevant decree of the interim government. Two weeks after this decision was fixed in one of the articles of the national constitution.

Government flag

The governmental flag of Belgium, in comparison with the civilian version, has one difference. It consists in the fact that on the golden strip there is an image of a lion and a crown standing on the hind legs. In 1950, he officially became a state symbol. Until then, this flag was the flag of the country's navy. At present, the ships of the state walk on a white cloth crossed by the cross of St. Andrew. In the upper part of it there is an image of a crown and crossed cannons of black color, and from below - an anchor.

In the predominant majority of cases, the first variant is used, consisting of the Brabant coat of arms, the Leopold Order of the Cross, the crown of the Grand Duke, two golden scepters and a red ribbon bearing the inscription that in literal translation means "Strength gives unity". In the large coat of arms used similar attributes, with the addition of two Belgian lions, a canopy, a gold helmet and the signs of nine local provinces. This coat of arms is used extremely rarely - only on laws and international treaties.
