He was brilliantly played by British artist Mark Rylens, who deservedly received an Oscar for his work as the best supporting actor. He portrayed a man of courage, calm and cold-bloodedness, who did not lose his head even when he was threatened with the death sentence and execution. This image of an even and reserved person is opposed to the American judicial system and the general public. Abel finds a common language with his lawyer. Despite the fact that they belong to different socio-political systems, both respect each other.

Separately, we should mention the role of the second plan. E. Ryan played the wife of the main character. Her image is very interesting from a psychological point of view. This woman strongly follows conservative views, but nevertheless is worthy of understanding. The fact is that she, condemning her husband for his protection of the Soviet intelligence officer, cares about the safety and prestige of his own family. The woman thinks first of all about children and at times forgets about universal values. From this point of view, its character is extremely ambiguous and complex.

O. Stowell embodied on the screen the image of the American scout Powers, who, fulfilling the task of the command, fell into the same situation as Abel. He was arrested and sentenced to a long prison term. This character is interesting in that he is a mirror image of a Soviet intelligence officer, who also deserves understanding and indulgence.
