Summary: Gogol, "The Enchanted Place" (introduction)

This story happened a long time, when the narrator was still a child. His father, having taken one of his four sons, went to sell tobacco to the Crimea. On the farm there were three children, their mother and grandfather, who guarded the turret (a garden, sown with watermelons and melons) from uninvited guests. One evening he drove by the traders. Among them were many acquaintances of my grandfather. When they met, they rushed to kiss and remember the past. Then the guests lit a pipe, went to a treat. It became fun, went to dance. Grandfather also decided to revive the old days and show the Chumak that he still has no equal. Then with the old man something unusual began to happen. But the next chapter (its brief content) will tell about it.

Gogol, "The Enchanted Place." Developments

Grandfather disappeared, but as soon as he reached the cucumber bed, his legs suddenly ceased to obey. He withdrew, but it's no use. From behind it was heard laughter. He looked back, and behind him there was no one. And the place is somewhere around unfamiliar. Before him lies a bare field, and on the side of the forest, from which sticks out some long pole. For a moment, it seemed to him that it was the scribe's scum, and the pole, which was visible from behind the trees, was a dovecote in the vegetable garden of a local priest. Around him is darkness, the sky is black, there is no month. Grandfather went through the field and soon found himself on a small path. Suddenly, a fire caught fire on one of the graves, then went out. Then the light flashed in another place. Our hero was delighted, having decided that this is a treasure. He regretted only that he did not have shovels now. "But it does not matter," thought his grandfather. "You can spot this place with something." He found a large branch and threw it at the grave, on which burned a light. Having done this, he returned to his turret. Only it was too late, the children slept. The next day, without telling anyone a word and taking the spade with him, the indefatigable old man went to the vegetable garden. Yes, that's the trouble - now he did not recognize these places. There is a dove, so there is no threshing floor. My grandfather will turn: there is a field, and the pigeon has disappeared. He returned home with nothing. And the next day, when the old man, deciding to dig up a new ridge on the bashtan, hit the shovel in the place where he did not dance, suddenly the pictures before him changed, and he was in the same field where he saw the lights. Our hero was delighted, ran up to the grave he had seen earlier. On it lay a large stone. Throwing it away, Grandfather decided to sniff the tobacco. Suddenly someone sneezed at him. The old man looked back, but there was no one. He accepted to dig the earth on the grave and dug out the cauldron. He was delighted and exclaimed: "Ah, that's where you are, my dear fellow!" The bird's head squeaked from the branch. Behind her, she blew her head from the lamb tree. A bear peered out from the bora and roared the same phrase. No sooner had my grandfather say new words, as he began to echo the same faces. The old man got scared, grabbed the cauldron and rushed off. About what happened to the unlucky hero next, the following next chapter (its brief summary) will tell.

Gogol, "The Enchanted Place." Ending

And the grandfather's house already missed. We sat down for dinner, but he's not there. After the meal, the hostess went into the kitchen garden to pour out the slops. Suddenly she saw a barrel climbing towards her. She decided that this was someone's joke, and poured the slops directly at her. But it turned out that this was the grandfather. In the cauldron, which he brought with him, there was only squabbling and rubbish. Since then, the old man has sworn to not believe more damn, and cursed a place in his garden surrounded by a wattle fence. It was said that when this field was hired under the melons of local chumaks, on this piece of land God knew that even it was impossible to disassemble.

More than a century and a half ago, NV Gogol wrote "The Enchanted Place." The summary of it is set forth in this article. Now it is no less popular than it was many years ago.
