The cast of "Sherlock": the protagonists of the series

The number of adaptations of the cult work of Conan Doyle about Sherlock Holmes has long exceeded a dozen. Each director tries to show his vision of how the brilliant detective looked and lived.

In 2010, Air Force One launched the first season of the new Sherlock series. Only three episodes of the series collected incredible ratings, and the channel decided to withdraw the sequel.

The action of the series takes place in modern London. The detective actively uses gadgets and all the blessings of this time. But the success of the series was presented not only by an excellent script and beautiful visualization. One of the reasons for the popularity of "Sherlock" is the cast. Those who became cult in a short period helped the television series to maintain high ratings.

Benedict Cumberbatch

The series "Sherlock" focuses on how the detective changed in modern realities. The creators of the series had to pick up an actor who could convey the genius of Holmes. After a long search in the cast of "Sherlock" entered Benedict Cumberbatch.

The actor excellently played the role of detective. In the first season, according to the idea of the creators Sherlock, although he lived in the twenty-first century, but used the speech speed inherent in the last century. However, this did not make Sherlock boring. In the second season, the actor presented his hero with a Victorian spirit. And in the third and fourth seasons, and altogether ceased to be like a man incapable of finding his place in society.

From season to season Sherlock performed by Cumberbatch is changing. The difficulties and troubles that he had to go through changed his vision of the world. And Sherlock from the last season I want to empathize.

Martin Freeman

Sherlock would not have been Sherlock if he had not had a faithful friend and partner - Dr. John Watson. The role of the neighbor was played by the famous actor Martin Freeman. The team of the series faced serious problems, choosing who will play Watson in the series "Sherlock". The actors and the roles they will have to perform must resonate. But, if the creators had only one Sherlock - Cumberbatch, then Watson had problems.

However, after numerous trials for the role was approved by Freeman. Journalist Victoria Thorp noted that it was thanks to Watson in the performance of Freeman Sherlock was fully disclosed. Against the background of the doctor, the detective appeared to be a sociopath who could not build healthy relationships with other people.

Dr. Watson is not an idiot. Although Doyle and his Sherlock often paid attention, it was not Watson's inability to quickly analyze the situation. But still the doctor remains Sherlock's best friend.

Rupert Graves

An integral part of the cast of Sherlock was Rupert Grevs, who played the role of Inspector Greg Lestrade. Unlike a series of books where the name of the inspector was never mentioned, the creators of the series in the second season gave the hero the name Greg.

In the series "Sherlock" actors and roles were constantly changing. But Greg Lestrade remained unchanged - he, according to Sherlock himself, was at least useless during the investigation, but he was still the best man in the whole Scotland Yard.

Andrew Scott

In the first season, Andrew Scott entered the cast of Sherlock. His first appearance in the series remained almost imperceptible - he played the boyfriend of Molly Cooper and the fan of Sherlock himself. But already in the third series of the first season, the masks were removed, and the main antagonist of the series, James Moriarty, appeared before the audience.

The role of Sherlock's main rival was played by young actor Andrew Scott. The creators departed a little from the canon. Moriarty in the performance of Scott - this is not a successful, courteous and charming professor of advanced age. The new Moriarty turned out to be a super-villain psychopath. For the sake of achieving his goals, he is ready to give his own life.

And although in the final of the second season he was defeated and killed, but Moriarty's ghost constantly hung over Sherlock's soul and drove him crazy.

Amanda Abbington

In the third season, Mary Morstan was introduced into the narrative, whose role was performed by Amanda Abbington. Modern Mary is noticeably different from the image of a woman created by Doyle.

Mary is a nurse, but she is distinguished by her extraordinary insight and the ability to see the real Sherlock through all the masks and walls.

Una Stubbs

An integral part of any adaptation of Sherlock - the landlady Mrs. Hudson. In the series, the role of Mrs. Hudson was played by Una Stubbs. In an interview, she noted that between her character and Sherlock established a fairly warm relationship. They are each in their own way, tied to each other.

Louise Briley

One of the characters that was created specifically for the series and was absent from the novels was Molly Hooper. The pathologist, who must shade Sherlock and disappear from the screens, won the spectator's sympathy, and already in the second season Molly became part of the main cast. The role of Molly was performed by actress Louise Brili.

Mark Gatis

One of the creators of the series - Mark Gatiss - played Sherlock's older brother - Mycroft Holmes. Undoubtedly, Mycroft changed, but the traits prescribed by Doyle remained. He is also a member of the government of the highest ranks and the Diogenes club, his relationship with his brother is complicated and complex, he does not communicate much and hides the real level of his intellect.
