Scorsese Martin: Filmography and biography

The legendary director Martin Scorsese in his 72 years became a living embodiment of the classics of cinema. This unique person is genius and talented literally in everything, for whatever he undertook. In addition to directing, he also excellently proved himself as a screenwriter, actor and producer.

early years

Martin Scorsese (photo you see in the article) - an American with Italian roots, was born in New York in 1942. Despite the fact that the native quarter of Martin Queens was the focus of crime in the city, the Catholic family of the boy was very right and devout. Scorsese grew up as a rather weak and painful child, he was suffering from asthma. Therefore, the family often took young Scorsese to the movies, where his future passion developed. However, the parents decided otherwise by choosing a Catholic school for Scorsese. Martin was to become a priest, but disagreeing with the decision of his relatives, he dropped out of school in the parish school and entered the College of Science and Arts in New York, where in 1964 he received a bachelor's degree. After that the future director decided to serve in the army and only after it returned to school, in 1966 entered the University of New York.

First works

Already at the time of the students Martin Scorsese began work on several short films, the most famous of which is "The Specific Haircut," condemning US interference in the conflict with Vietnam. In those same years, the first feature film of the young director - "Who Knocks on the Door to Me?", Where the main role was played by Harvey Keitel, at that time still unknown to any young actor, was also released. Originally, the name "I'll call first" was decided to be replaced. The debut of the creative tandem turned out so successful that Scorsese has worked with Harvey more than once in his films. By the way, Martin Scorsese is one of the few permanent directors who work with their favorite actors for many years, shooting them in the most diverse films, thereby revealing their potential. Next were "Bertha nicknamed" Commodity Car "" and "Street Scenes".

First successes

The year 1973 was the first breakthrough of Martin, after the drama "The Evil Street" appeared on the screen, where Keitel and the then acting actor Robert De Niro were in the lead roles. We can say that this first joint work of the two future masters of Hollywood in some way became a turning point in American cinema, because it was with this film that the long and very fruitful work of two talented people began, which gave the world a considerable number of quality films. The audience appreciated the film about the real life of New York's Little Italy, which shot Scorsese. Martin continued to improve and released in 1974 a dramatic picture "Alice does not live here anymore". Leading actress Ellen Burstin was awarded an Oscar, and the film itself was very warmly received at the Cannes Film Festival.

The beginning of an incredible tandem

But 1976 was very busy with Scorsese. Martin married the second time, his chosen one was the writer Julia Cameron. The first marriage of the director is known very little, his first wife was named Lareyn Mari Brennan. The couple had a daughter, Katherine. But in addition to the affairs of love Scorsese received the Palme d'Or of the Cannes Film Festival for the film "Taxi Driver", as well as other awards and prizes, including the tape was awarded four nominations for "Oscar". We can assume that this film has fully revealed to the audience and critics the skill of the talented director. And although the reviews on the film were different, and some and quite negative, on the whole it only spurred interest in the "Taxi Driver", the main role in which masterfully embodied De Niro.

Crisis and revival

On the wave of success in 1977 came the musical drama "New York, New York," and the following year - the documentary "The Last Waltz." But 1978 was marked by depression and creative crisis of the director, which was accompanied by a divorce from his wife, which resulted in Martin Scorsese in the hospital, according to rumors, from a drug overdose. To pull him out of this state was able to friend and companion Robert De Niro, interested the master with a new project. So began work on the "Mad Bull", a story about the boxing star of the middle of the last century Jake Lamotte, played by De Niro. Noteworthy is the fact that the actor for almost two years was engaged in boxing specifically for the role, and coached by Lamotte himself. As a result, thanks to the well-coordinated work of the creative tandem, the film became a real masterpiece. In Scorsese's life a new stage began, marked by the nomination for an Oscar and an acquaintance with his future wife Isabella Rossellini.

Orientation to Hollywood

"The King of Comedy" was the first unsuccessful film with Robert De Niro in the title role, which was shot by Martin Scorsese. Filmography of the famous director from this failure did not suffer, but the creative ways with a friend dispersed. Afterwards there was another not very successful film - "After work", out of the general style of the director's work, she did not deserve the attention of a wide audience, although critics and accepted it favorably. But already the "Color of Money" about billiard professionals with the legendary Paul Newman and rising star Tom Cruise in 1986 was very successfully received by spectators. Unlike most of the early serious and ostrosotsialnyh films of the director, who appreciated the European film critics, this tape was aimed at Hollywood, or rather, the public. This moment once again proved the genius of the master, which can please both the discerning critics and the diverse tastes of the audience. As for the director's private life, in 1983 he divorced Rossellini, and in 1985, he married producer Barbara De Fina.

Creative Experiment

"The Last Temptation of Christ" came out on big screens in 1988, this is perhaps one of Scorsese's most controversial and controversial films. Martin worked on the tape with representatives of several different denominations. As a Catholic, he transferred the history of the Orthodox Nicos Kazantzakis to the screen, and the writer Paul Schroeder turned out to be a Calvinist. The selection of actors was also peculiar. Christ, for example, played Willem Dafoe, previously known for the roles of villains and criminals, and rock musician David Bowie embodied the role of Pontius Pilate. Despite the fact that the performance was severely criticized by religious representatives, Martin Scorsese received another nomination for the Oscar. The standard of gangster cinema - "Glorious Guys", released in 1990, again reunited the tandem of De Niro, Joe Pesci and Scorsese, as in the "Mad Bull", on the same platform. The next picture brought only the nomination, the long-awaited "Oscar" the director never received. But the fruitful trio after five years gave the world a fascinating "Casino" about the mafia gambling business. This was the eighth joint project of friends of De Niro and Scorsese, whom Steven Spielberg called "Yin and Yang."

Martin Scorsese. Filmography: the director and not only

Later Martin Scorsese revealed new facets of his talent, trying himself in atypical scenes for him, such as the historical drama "Kundun" about Tibet and the thriller "Resurrecting the Dead" with Nicolas Cage. Until 2002, many more films were shot, directed by Martin Scorsese. The filmography of an American of Italian origin is distinguished by the fact that he produced many of his projects, wrote scripts for the most part, and also appeared in small roles in more than half of his films. Since 2002, a new stage in the creative path of the brilliant master began, his new protégé was the young and talented Leonardo DiCaprio. Among their joint works - a considerable number of incredibly successful films, and for "Departed" Scorsese finally received his "Oscar". Movies with DiCaprio in the title role: "The Departed", "Aviator", "Gangs of New York", "The Wolf from Wall Street", "The Island of the Damned" - undoubtedly the best films of Martin Scorsese. Of course, the list will be incomplete, without his early masterpieces: "Evil Street", "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull", "Color of Money", "Glorious Guys", "Casino." In addition to full-length films and shorts, several of his works include a number of musical films, a clip by pop-king Michael Jackson for the song "Bad" and a documentary film "The History of American Cinema by Martin Scorsese."

Modernity and future plans

At this point, the brilliant director does not stop there. Next year, the release of a new film - "Silence" is expected. And apparently, the tape promises to be intriguing. Since 1999 and to this day Scorsese lives in his beloved New York with his fifth wife - Helen Morris, in the marriage of which Francesca was born - the third daughter of the director. Martin is engaged in transcendental meditation and promotes it to the masses, proving its necessity for people suffering from nervous disorders.
