The first chapter begins with the biography of Pyotr Andreevich Grinev. The father of this hero served, and then retired. There were 9 children in the family of Grinev, however, eight of them died in infancy, and Peter remained alone. His father had written it down before his birth to the Semenov regiment. Before the coming of age, Pyotr Andreevich was on leave. Uncle Savelich serves as the boy's tutor. He leads the development of the Russian diploma Petrusha.

After a while Peter the Baptist was sent to Peter. He taught him German, French, and various sciences. But Bepre raised his child was not engaged, but only drank and walked. The boy's father soon discovered this and drove the teacher away. Peter in the 17th year sent to the service, but not in the place where he hoped to get. He goes to Orenburg instead of Petersburg. This decision determined the fate of Peter, the hero of the work "The Captain's Daughter".

Chapter 1 describes the father's farewell to his son. He tells him that it is necessary to cherish the honor of a young man. Petya, having arrived in Simbirsk, gets acquainted in a tavern with Zurin, captain, who taught him to play billiards, and also spoiled it and won from him 100 rubles. Grinev seemed to break free for the first time. He behaves like a boy. In the morning, Zurin requires a win. Pyotr Andreevich, in order to show his character, makes Savelich, protesting this, give money. Then, feeling a pang of conscience, Grinev leaves Simbirsk. He approaches him to take the last blessing, but instead of his father sees an unknown man with a black beard. Grinev is surprised, but his mother convinces him that this is his planted father. Waving an ax, a black-bearded peasant jumps up, dead bodies fill the whole room. The person at the same time smiles at Pyotr Andreevich, and also offers that blessing.

Grinev, already at an inn, looks at his escort and notices that he is the same person from a dream. He is a middle-aged man of forty, lean and broad-shouldered. It's already noticeable in the black beard. The eyes of a man are alive, they feel the sharpness and subtlety of the mind. A rather pleasant expression is the face of the leader. It's cheating. His hair is cut in a circle, and this man is dressed in Tatar bloomers and an old Armenian.

The leader converses with the host in the "allegorical language." Pyotr Andreevich thanks his companion, gives him a hare sheepskin coat, pours a glass of wine.
