The city is located in the south of Ukraine, on the bank of the largest European river Dnepr. It is the administrative center of the province of the same name, as well as an important river and sea port of its country.

The city received its beautiful name from the most famous Crimean colony - Chersonesos. And the ancient Greek word "Chersonesus" can be translated as "peninsula".

Ukrainian Kherson has six foreign sister cities, among which is the capital of Norway, Oslo.

Kherson: a brief historical background

At the place where Kherson is now, people lived in pre-Christian times. This is evidenced by archaeological excavations conducted here. In particular, in the territory of one of the parks of the city, a Scythian burial was found, dating back to the scientists of the 6th century BC.

The cause of the emergence of Kherson became the Russo-Turkish War. Catherine II ordered to build a powerful fortress in the Black Sea region in order to protect itself against future Turkish attacks. So in 1778 a new city appeared on the map of the Russian Empire - Kherson. One of its founders can be considered Prince Potemkin (who is still here), but the process of building the Kherson stronghold was led by Alexander Pushkin's cousin - Ivan Abramovich Hannibal.

In the period from 1917 to 1920, power in Kherson changed more than ten times! After the end of World War II, the city turns into a powerful industrial and agricultural center of the Ukrainian SSR. At the end of the 1950s, more than 150,000 people lived there.

To date, about 100 different enterprises operate in Kherson. Among them - a commercial port, shipbuilding and combine factories, a cotton and shoe factory, a factory of reinforced concrete structures and others.

Main Attractions of Kherson

In the historical center of the city there are quite a lot of old buildings. The most interesting of them are the gate of the 18th-century Kherson fortress, Arsenal, the building of the Black Sea hospital, the city hall, the Church of the Heart of Jesus, the Chabad synagogue and others.

An important historical and architectural monument of Kherson is the Cathedral of the Savior - the oldest building in the city, built in 1786. The one-domed temple, designed in the style of classicism, is built from local building material - sandstone. In this cathedral many famous personalities are buried. Among them - Grigory Potemkin, Major-General Ivan Sinelnikov, Moldovan prince Rossetti Emmanuel and others.

Interest in tourists can cause and the central urban cemetery of Kherson. The oldest burial place on it dates back to 1790. Well, in the vicinity of the city you can see the miracle of engineering technology - Agigol Lighthouse. It consists of steel shear and has a hyperboloid structure. The author of the highest lighthouse in Ukraine (65 meters) is the outstanding engineer-architect Vladimir Shukhov.
