The biggest bear today is white

The oldest and largest bear in the world is South American. He dwelt in the Pleistocene glacial period in the region of modern Argentina. It is the biggest bear in the world at all times. The weight of the male was about 1600 kilograms, and its height - up to 3.4 meters (if the animal stood on its hind legs).

It should be said that this is the world's largest bear lived long enough, despite the presence of a large number of serious injuries: on its petrified remains there are traces of battles. Fights, presumably, happened for the attention of the female and for the prey. The largest bear was fed by large mammals.

It should be said that for a long time representatives of this large family as a result of natural selection have significantly decreased in size. So, the only surviving representative, spectacled bear, weighs no more than one hundred and forty kilograms.

To date, the most abundant are individuals with a weight of 400-500 kilograms. Today the biggest bear is white. These animals settle in large areas, but do not actively protect them.

The biggest bear can be very aggressive. This is especially evident during the mating season. At this time, often fights males with each other. The females, on the contrary, are relatively mild in character. They are more benevolent and patient. Bears often arrange lairs nearby. Often, females take on alien pups, treating them as their own. There were also cases when two females lived in one lair.

The largest bear begins mating in the summer or in the spring. Near the female is going from three to seven males. The resulting pair remains briefly together - not more than three days - for the time of the female's presence in estrus (estrus period).

The largest bear migrates widely enough to the very pole from the coasts of the Arctic Ocean. Pregnant females go to the mainland in autumn to arrange a lair. The cubs are born in the coldest period. Before you lie down in the den, females feed a sufficient amount of fat, which is consumed throughout the winter.

It should be said that there are not so many places convenient for the device of a lair. For them, multi-meter steady snow deposits are necessary. As a rule, they are formed in hilly areas or low-mountainous low mountains. Some are located in the depths of the island, others are on the shore. Females also have favorite places where they gather for delivery. For example, on the island of Franz Joseph and Wrangel Island , there are about one hundred and fifty to two hundred lairs every year. Because of such a dense cluster of moths, these places are also called "maternity homes".

Bears lie dormant not immediately after the device of the den, but by the middle of November. By this time the development of oocytes begins. Females lie in the den for six months. And in the midst of winter babies are born. As a rule, there are two cubs. Although the number of young can be from one to three.
