A former officer, a veteran of the Caucasian war, Maxim Maksimovich tells his life story, which became the first part of the novel called Bela. The reader is offered a summary of it. After serving with Maxim Maximovich for about a year, a young man kidnaps the daughter of Belu from the local prince. Having tamed and subordinated her, he falls in love with a girl. However, after about four months, the ensign already grows cold towards this romantic enterprise. Belu is kidnapped by Kazbich. It turns out that his horse Pechorin gave Azamat, the girl's brother, for helping her kidnap. Kazbich, realizing that he will not leave the chase, kills Bela.

The author gets a diary of Pechorin, excerpts from which became the central part of the novel. The reader is offered a brief summary. "The Hero of Our Time" in Pyatigorsk gets acquainted with the daughter of the Moscow rich princess. From boredom Pechorin begins to conquer the heart of Mary. Soon he already dances with her at the ball. Otshiv from Ligovskaya, the youngest drunken captain, Pechorin receives from the princess an invitation to visit her house.

The composition of the novel "The Hero of Our Time" can be continued by describing the arrival at the resort of Vera, the former lover of the main character of the work. She still loves Pechorin, but is married. Jealous of Gregory's affection for the princess's daughter, Vera asks him not to marry Mary, and in exchange promises to have a night date alone.

Defending the honor of the Ligovsky-younger, Pechorin kills Grusnitsky in a duel, which slandered the princess. Faith, learning about the duel for her sake, is nervous, than gives her feelings to Gregory before her husband. The spouse takes her from the resort.

Princess offers Pechorin to marry Mary, but he confesses that he took care of her for the sake of laughter, boredom.

The final chapter of the novel was the novel "Fatalist". The events that occur will give the reader a summary of it.
