Stepwise running-in of the boat engine

Any new engine requires, at the first stage, sparing operating modes to "run-in" some of its parts. However, the failure of this condition is unlikely to seriously damage a good power unit. Proceeding from this, it is appropriate to ask whether the running of the boat engine is necessary in general and how to produce it. The answer is extremely simple: failure to comply with the instructions (where running-in is mandatory) will lead to a loss of warranty for the engine. Well, besides this, properly "running" a new engine, you, perhaps, significantly increase its service life.

Running out of a boat engine

If, for some reason, the new engine was not "run-in" by the seller or his service, it should be performed independently, following the diagram:

- The first fifteen minutes warm up the engine at idle. At the same time, it is necessary to audit the operation of the cooling system. The control "jet" of the coolant must not be interrupted, but must flow smoothly. If the cooling system is OK, you can proceed to the next step.

- The second stage lasts up to two hours of engine operation. Here we allow "gas" for half the stroke of the handle, which should not exceed 3500 rpm. Every ten to fifteen minutes, the engine speed should be changed, but not exceed the above limit. As in the first stage, special attention should be given to the uniformity of the flow of the control "jet."

- The third stage. We raise the engine speed to 2/3 of the handle stroke (4500 rpm). Every fifteen minutes we manipulate the "gas" in the above-mentioned limits. In this mode, running out of the boat motor should take place within two hours.

- The fourth stage. For three hours, periodically for one or two minutes, we give full gas, and then we drop it to three quarters of the stroke of the handle.

As in the previous stages, we try to change the speed every fifteen minutes and do not forget about the control of the water pump. After running out of the boat engine is over, it should be some time (3-4 hours) to avoid constant work at full throttle. You also need to try to manipulate the turns every fifteen minutes. Do not exceed the maximum permissible values recommended by the manufacturer. Then you need to carry out maintenance, replace the oil in the gearbox, check the compression. All the run-in is complete.

Features of running in of some motors

Running out of the Yamaha boat engine is performed with the addition of extra oil. In the first ten hours of engine operation, the ratio of the mixture of fuel and this fluid should be 1/50.

Similarly, with increased oil content in the fuel mixture, the running of the Mercury boat engine should take place, but with a different ratio of 1/25. In both cases, these engines must not be run out of water. This can damage the cooling system. And more: if running-in of these motors occurs in the cold season, it will be advisable to put more "hot" spark plugs, which should prevent the formation of carbon deposits on them due to the high oil content of the mixture.

General rule

For replacement, only use engine oil recommended by the manufacturer. Its consumable volume is small, and it is completely pointless to save here. Moreover, there is a risk of damaging the engine or losing the warranty on it.
