Slalom, giant slalom, downhill skiing

"The trail of a skier left on the slope" is the translation of the word "slalom" from Scandinavian. Anyone who thinks that skiing was invented recently, is mistaken. Even on the rock drawings of the Norwegian island of Rodei, a ski hunter was depicted. Perfectly preserved ancient skis were found in the swampy places of Scandinavia. These findings are from so-called stepping skis. The first sliding skis appeared in Finnish and Lapland hunters in the sixth century. And in the Russian chronicles of these adaptations for the first time mentioned in 1444, in connection with a campaign against one of the princes of the Golden Horde. Folk fun, fun, fun and even competitions on skis from the earliest times pleased the population of the planet.

Modern competitions

There is no limit to human invention! In addition to the usual ski competitions, including races, slalom, downhill, freestyle and others, in recent years there have been extreme fun with the use of skis:

  • Flying on a hang glider with skis;
  • Parachute jump with skis;
  • Downhill skiing to overtake the racing driver;
  • Jump from the airplane on skis without a parachute;
  • Skiing on sand dunes;
  • Skiing on mini-skis.

These very revealing and interesting types of skiing competitions are not yet included in the official programs.

Categories

Categories of skiing:

1. Alpine - all kinds of high-speed descents: slalom (giant, super-giant and just slalom), high-speed descents (downhill), a combination of two slopes (slalom and speed).

2. Freestyle is a free, non-speed descent on skis with simultaneous execution of ski acrobatics, a kind of ski ballet.

3. North - jumping from the springboard, racing, orienteering competitions, double-event (jump from the springboard and the subsequent race).

4. Descent on a snowboard.

5. Biathlon (cross-country skiing with rifle shooting).

6. Ski arch (cross-country skiing with archery).

7. Ski tour - one of the categories of sports tourism.

8. Ski-mountaineering. It is free and risky downhill skiing, the speed at which it develops is very high. It can be compared to a jump from a height.

About giant slalom

In slalom competitions, athletes at a huge speed must literally fly through a certain number of control points (gates) in the minimum time. For male and female races the number and width of the gate are different and depend on the type of slalom. The control point can not be crossed and missed, otherwise disqualification is unavoidable. Usually the athlete goes to the average result for two attempts.

Slalom super-giant (downhill skiing) received its name for the increased number of gates, the distance between them and the length of the route.

The supergiant is an intermediate discipline between the giant slalom and the downhill (downhill). The goal is one - speed. The distance between the control flags, which according to the rules this ski slope allows according to the rules, is 30 meters. Only one run of the skier is assessed.

Features of trails for competitions

For all high-speed ski slopes, only trails with natural terrain are used. First of all, the differences in heights, the extent of the tortuous terrain, the length of the route are important. The flags and gates of the gate are placed by the trainers in compliance with all norms. It is important to avoid the hidden dangers of the terrain, which can lead to serious falls and injuries.

  • Trails length of about 450 m and a difference in altitude of 140 m or more are suitable for competitions in the usual slalom. The smallest distance between the flags is 75 cm.
  • Giant slalom is carried out on the routes, the length of which is 1 km or 1.5 km, the height difference is up to five hundred meters, the width of the gate is 13 meters.
  • In supergiant slalom flags are placed at a distance of thirty meters from each other. The length of the route is up to 2.5 km, the difference in altitude is up to six hundred meters.
  • Downhill downhill skiing is done on perfectly straight roads, without jumps, hills and bumps. The best performance is achieved by athletes on high-altitude routes with rarefied air. Skiers in aerodynamic suits, using a special position of the body, develop huge speeds in this kind of competition. Accelerating the jump (with a large slope of the track), the athletes, making a downhill skiing, the speed record showed an impressive: more than 200 km per hour.

A few half-joking wishes for beginners (and not only) skiers

A person engaged in skiing can achieve the highest results in a downhill. Good advice:

  • In order to decrease less, it is necessary to learn to brake.
  • Any bruises, scratches and even moral trauma heal.
  • The higher the speed, the faster the mountain ends.
  • It is foolish to hope that people who are accidentally knocked down or hurt during the descent will not repay the same, after catching you the next time.
  • Whatever the results of the descent, warm coffee and friends are waiting downstairs, at the very least - an ambulance.
