Historical and literary museum

The literary museum is the main attraction of Taldom. The institution is located in the center of the city at the address: 41 Saltykov-Shchedrin Street. This is very symbolic, because most of the exhibits in this museum are associated with the name of this particular figure of Russian literature.

In the historical and literary museum of Taldom you can see personal items, books, diaries, photographs and autographs of those writers, critics and poets whose life and activities were connected with this land. The Taldom Museum annually visits about five thousand people.

Architectural sights of Taldom

The attention of tourists in Taldom attracts numerous monuments of architecture. For example, the literary museum, which we already mentioned above, is located in the beautiful Volkov manor. This is the oldest stone building in the whole city. But the city library was located in the estate of a local merchant Kiselev. This house stands out among the rest with its tiny kokoshniks.

The main architectural symbol of Taldom is, of course, a fire depot complex built in the beginning of the last century. In 2013, this building was rebuilt using the old (authentic) brick. After reconstruction, the city registry office of Taldoma was located in it.

Next to the fire tower is another architectural monument - the church of the Archangel Michael. This temple was erected in the beginning of the XIX century. In 1870, it was adorned with a unique faience iconostasis, fragments of which have survived to this day. The interior of the temple was badly damaged in Soviet times, when it housed a shoe factory. Today the shrine is gradually restored.

The Saltykov estate in the village of Spas-Ugol

Fifteen kilometers from Taldom there is a tiny village called Spas-Ugol. It is the "patrimonial nest" of Mikhail Yevgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin. A famous Russian writer and journalist was born here on January 15, 1826. In this estate he lived until 1836. The writer's memories of life in this village can be found in his last book, entitled "Poshekhonskaya Starina."

In 1918, the Saltykov estate in the village of Spas-Ugol burned down. Only the Savior-Transfiguration Church has survived, with an impressive three-tier bell tower. Today there is a museum named after Saltykov-Shchedrin.

Another curious fact about this small village: in 1887 on the outskirts of Spas-Ugla landed a balloon with Dmitry Mendeleev on board. The great scientist observed from him a solar eclipse.

Porcelain factory in Verbilki

The history of the porcelain and faience industry of Russia has been counted for almost three centuries. For its development in the European part of the country there are all natural resources: kaolin, feldspar, quartz and plastic clay. One of the oldest enterprises for the production of porcelain products in Russia is a plant in Verbilki - a village located to the south of the city of Taldoma.

The porcelain factory in Verbilki was founded in 1766. The products of this factory were of excellent quality. Already at the end of the XVIII century the production of the plant could be seen an image of the Moscow coat of arms - a kind of quality sign of that period.

In the Soviet period of history, the plant established the production of mass, but rather high-quality products - dishes and figurines. This company managed to survive the economic crisis of the 90s. To date, this is one of the three operating porcelain factories in Russia.
