The foundation of Sevastopol corresponds to the period of the end of the XVIII century, more precisely, 1783, where the military base of the Russian fleet was always located. Moreover, this is the main base of the Black Sea Fleet. In addition, Sevastopol is one of the largest industrial, scientific and cultural centers of the Crimea peninsula. The heroic city is constantly visited by tourists to plunge into past historical times and breathe in the smell of Russian weapons glory. The flag of Sevastopol proudly develops on administrative buildings and squares.

The return of Sevastopol to Russia in March 2014 was greeted with great enthusiasm by the residents of the city. This happened after the Crimean Federal District of Russia was founded. The importance of Sevastopol, as a federal city within the Crimean region, can not be overestimated. This place is a cluster of monuments of history and architecture, legendary buildings, such as St. George's staircase on the territory of the monastery.

Bay Inkerman became the basis for a huge beacon, which is considered to be the tallest of Russian similar structures. Underground shipyards, belonging to the era of the Soviet period, is also one of the attractions attracting a lot of tourists to Sevastopol.

The city is the pride of the people

If you dig, as they say, deep into the centuries, it's worth mentioning the oysters of Sevastopol. As you know, these mollusks were delivered to the table by the king himself. Thus, historical events, which are reflected in the pages of documentary sources, could not but be reflected in the symbols of a city like Sevastopol. The flag and the coat of arms changed insignificantly.

Residents of Sevastopol, proud of their hero city, raise state symbols during any festive events. As a rule, these events under the fluttering canvases of the flag of the native port end with unchanged fireworks. Sevastopol proudly bear the title of heroes, attaching great importance to the continuity of generations and passing on legends and historical memoirs from grandfather to father, from father to son. Everyone honors the flag of the homeland. Sevastopol is an integral part of our difficult history.

Peripeteias of the Silver Griffin and the Golden Star

The flag with the image of a silver griffin on a red cloth was approved back in 1893. Symbols of the emperor's power and the period of the Soviet past clashed in the struggle for primacy. In April 2000, approved the type and design of state symbols, reflecting the origins of the hero-city belonging to the Russian fleet. From these considerations, the flag of Sevastopol has acquired the appearance of a red cloth (according to official sources, the colors of Bordeaux) with the emblem of Sevastopol located in the center .

All colors and images correspond to the original coat of arms of the city. It is a shield, the shape of which is adopted in heraldry according to the French type. In one (upper) part of the emblem - an image of the medal "Golden Star". This award was awarded to Sevastopol in 1965 as a symbol of the heroic struggle of the people of the city in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.

Flag Colors

The image of the medal on the background of white (silver in the original) colors is also symbolic. White color means white walls of the city, white stone Sevastopol. The second field on the shield is painted in the color of a sea wave, for understandable reasons symbolizing the sea. Against the sea there is a monument to sunken ships. Two fields of the coat of arms connect the golden branch from the laurel leaves. Its significance is the connection of heroic generations who shared difficult heroic times with their native city.

Now almost everyone knows what the Sevastopol flag looks like. Photo of the state symbols can be seen at any festive event in the city.

Flag today

In winter 2015, the Legislative Assembly of Sevastopol considered the question of changing the symbols of the city, the coat of arms and the flag. It was suggested to return to the griffin, releasing the Soviet vestiges. The topic was discussed hotly. In the new version, the griffin is surrounded also by the two-headed eagle, crowned with three royal crowns, and the Admiralty anchors, and the St. George ribbon.

Both versions of the flag, old and current, found their supporters. The issue did not reach the point of consideration. The head of the law on the change of symbols was forced to withdraw his request. Until now, the flag of Sevastopol depicts a white and blue emblem with a Gold-colored star and a commemorative sign of Sevastopol, a monument to ships. This is a real symbol, which managed to outlast wars, disagreements and a new reunion. Respect and pride are experienced by local residents for their city, which managed to survive so much.
