Etymology of the name

It comes from the ancient Persian word "Hindu" or Sanskrit "sindhu", which denote the name of the Indus River. Ancient authors called the inhabitants of the country the people of Indus (Indoi). But there is another name for the republic, enshrined in the Constitution, Bharat. It comes from the name of the ancient king in Sanskrit, mentioned by the Mahabharata. Since the time of the Mongolian Empire , another toponym, Hindustan, has been used, but it has no official status.

An amazing structure, made of white marble, is located in Agra. More than twenty years, twenty thousand workers built this miracle on the orders of Shah Jahan for his beloved wife, who suddenly died. The mausoleum is surrounded by minarets, a park and a pond, its interior decoration is striking with luxurious decor.
  • The Caves of Ajanta. Created before our era by Buddhist monks, they were abandoned by them and forgotten. Opened again in 1819, caves today store a huge number of masterpieces of Buddhist art.
  • Fort Jaisalmer. A fantastic fortress, remote from tourist roads. Rises on a hill and has maintained its original appearance. Outside the gates of the fort there are a palace, a courtyard, temples, havelis. From here you can go to the desert on a camel.
  • Golden Temple Harmandir-Sahib. One of the oldest buildings in the country, the religious center of the Sikhs. You can get into the sacred building on a narrow bridge of marble, thrown over an artificial lake.
  • Well of Chand Baori. This is a real religious complex, which includes many buildings and a golden temple in the center of the reservoir.
  • The temple of Virupaksha, which operated already in the seventh century. Today, not only pilgrims, but also tourists flock here, because there are numerous festivals and celebrations here. This is a whole ensemble, which includes the main temple, gates, small sanctuaries, column arcade, courtyards, chambers, towers.
  • The Shrine of Itemad-ud-Daula, surrounded by an emerald park. Outwardly resembles the Taj Mahal in miniature. It is located in Agra.
  • Palace of Lake Pikola. He was built in the middle of a pond in the eighteenth century. Earlier it was the summer residence of kings, and today the hotel is located here.
  • The Lakshmi-Narayana Temple in Delhi, surrounded by a luxurious park. There are artificial caves for meditation, beautiful fountains, houses, a library.
  • The Qutb Minar minaret is a tall building made of bricks, the surface of which is completely covered with surami from the Koran.
  • Red Fort (India). On which continent is this wonder of the world, everything is clear. The fortress adjoins the Yamuna and Taj-Mahal rivers and is surrounded by a massive wall. The object is protected by UNESCO as a cultural monument of the country.
