Samuys Gamgee: literary biography and personal qualities

It is difficult to find a person who has not read, not watched, or at least not heard of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. This monumental work of the world-renowned English writer John Tolkien is considered to be one of the best works of world literature for many years and remains one of the most widely read to this day. Your attention is presented to one of the key characters of this incredibly fabulous story - Samuys Gamgee Brave.

Character Biography

Samuys appeared in the Third Age, April 6, 2980, in the Shire. He can safely be called a hereditary gardener, because his father, Hamstast Gamgee, was also a gardener. In addition to Sam, Hamfast and Bell Goodchild had five more children.
Samuys long stayed with Bilbo Baggins, who taught him to write, read, and still talked a lot about his adventures. And despite all his father's worries that he was "too enthusiastic about these elves," he dreamed of seeing them live ...

The eldest of the brothers, named Hamson, began to work with his uncle. It was at Edvays Roper (that's the name of his uncle) that Sam learned to knit knots so dashingly. His younger sister became the wife of Tom Cotton, who had a sister Rosie, very much liked Sam ...
But his quiet and quiet life suddenly ended on the day of the celebration of Bilbo Beggins' one hundred and eleventh birthday, when he disappeared right during his thank-you and, as it turned out, farewell speech, having previously transferred his property to Frodo. Then Samuys Gamgee and became his gardener, replacing his father in this post.

Unexpected journey

And one evening, cutting the grass by the window, he overheard the story that Gendalf told Frodo - the mystery of the Ring of Power and the fact that Frodo is to go on a secret hike. As punishment for eavesdropping, Gandalf "forces" Samuys to make a company to Beggins Jr., and they go on a dangerous journey. However, eventually it turns out that he overheard specifically and went all the same.

After a while, two more hobbits - Meriadok Brandibak and Peregrin Tuk, who were Frodo's cousins - joined the company. A small detachment headed for Rivendell, the refuge of the elves, where Sam's dream was fulfilled, and he finally got to know them.

The Fellowship of the Ring

On the advice of lord Elrond (the king of the elves) it was decided to create a detachment - the Brotherhood of the Ring, which will go to Mordor to destroy the Ring once and for all. Samuys Gamgee (photo of the actor who embodied the image, you can see below), despite the fact that he was not invited, secretly made his way to the council and said that "Mr. Frodo will not go anywhere without him." Their company was joined by hobbits, people, elf, dwarf and wizard ...

And when, at the Rauros waterfall, the Brotherhood ceased to exist, and Frodo decided to go to Mordor himself, Samuys Gamgee persuaded Beggins not to abandon the fellow traveler. He even had to rush into the river in order to catch up with the boat, although he did not know how to swim at all.

Personal qualities

Frodo, because of the strength of the Ring, began to weaken, and Sam had to carry most of the load, to cook food, and he also tried to stay as watchman as often as he could. The products he distributed so that Frodo would get the most, and generally in every possible way tried to facilitate that journey.

Later, when it seemed that Frodo was dead in the lair of the spider Shelob (where Gollum escorted them), Sam carried the Ring further. However, when he overheard the conversation of the orcs and found out that his friend was alive, Samuys Gamgee immediately rushed to his rescue, not being frightened of the guards. After releasing his companion, Sam returned the Ring to him, and the brave Hobbits moved on.

It is worth mentioning separately that of all the characters, the former owners of the Ring, Samuys Gamgee (the image of this hobbit has its real basis, but about this a little later) - the only one who gave it of his own free will. It is also interesting that, during the possession of the Ring of Sam, as well as the rest, he was also tempted to become the Lord of the Ring, but with only one goal - to destroy Mordor, and in its place to erect a wonderful garden, which in the world is nowhere else.

Friends, finally, completed their journey to the Rock of Death. But at the most crucial moment Frodo attacked Gollum. However, he immediately fell down with the Ring to the abyss with boiling lava, thereby completing such a dangerous mission entrusted to the hobbits.

End of travel

Upon returning home, friends had to raise the hobbits to rebel to free their native land from enemies. After the victory, Sam went around the whole Shire, planting the territory with new trees in return for those that were destroyed by order of the dark sorcerer Saruman. The saplings of these trees were presented to him by the Lady of Elves Galadriel. These trees grew much faster than usual and were of extraordinary beauty. After seeding, he had a little fertile soil, which he scattered over one of the areas, which caused the most rapid growth in the history of the Shire.

Returning from the War of Middle-earth, Sam decided to marry. His second half was Rosie Cotton, which, as mentioned earlier, he was long in love. They had thirteen children. When the first-born appeared, Sam learned that Frodo would forever leave the Shire and Middle-earth, and his way now lies in the Immortal Lands. In memory, the hobbit left him his manuscript of their adventures.

In the Shire, Samuiza was elected mayor for seven consecutive terms. After surviving his wife, Sam left the Shire at the age of 102 and swam away to the Gray Harbor. As the last Keeper of the Ring, he was given the right to live next to Frodo in the Immortal Lands.

Character Creation

Many fans of the writer are sure that Sam is the most important character in this story, and not least because of his simple background. Tolkien himself agreed with this in part, calling him "the most elaborate character", and also telling that Sam is very similar in character to the English soldier, personal assistant and adjutant with whom he was familiar during the war of 1914 (here it is worth to clarify, That the author wrote his famous epic after participating in the First World War).

Samuys Gamgee: The Actor

"The Lord of the Rings" - not the first role in the career of an American actor. But we will not go ahead and tell about him and his career in more detail. Sean Astin was born in Santa Monica on February 25, 1971. His mother, Patty Duke, was an actress. Before his middle age, Sean did not know his father. And it was only after a whole series of genetic tests that it turned out that on the maternal line there were German-Irish genes in it, and on the paternal side there were Austrian-Jewish genes.

He studied at a Catholic school, but later became a Protestant and attended the Presbyterian church in the city of Bel Air. He was also a student at the Crossroad Art School and a student at the University of California (specialty - American Literature and Culture).

Career and interesting facts

The first role went to Sean in the 1981 film - Please Don`t Hit Me, Mom. Astin played a boy who was beaten by his mother (played by Shawn's own mother - Patty Duke). Then he played in many films, unknown in Russia, for twenty years. And then the year 2000 presented a truly stellar role - Samuys Gamgee. "The Lord of the Rings" - a whole event in the film world. He even received the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Four years later, Sean published a book "There and Back" - his own memories and impressions of the filming process. He also made a tattoo on his wrist (like other members of the "Brotherhood of the Ring") in the form of the rune-engraved word "nine". By the way, in the final stage of kinotrilogy, where Sam returns home, and his daughter runs out to meet him, it was the real daughter of Shawn Astin, Alexander. In addition to her, Sean (he is married to Luis Herrell, "Miss Indiana 1984") has two more daughters: Elizabeth and Isabella.

Despite the fact that the most significant character he played, this is Samuys Gamgee, the actor ("The Lord of the Rings", unfortunately, the only world blockbuster in Sean's career) continues to act actively in film and television, and also is engaged in scoring. He is also a producer and director. And his faithful fans are waiting impatiently for him to meet in any hypostasis.
