"Rudin": a summary of the work of Turgenev

The novel "Rudin" was written in 1855. The main character of the book can be attributed to the type of extra people who can not find their place in life. Of course, it is impossible to contain all the subtleties of relationships in a concise manner. Turgenev's novel "Rudin" especially not glorified, but for the author this work was very important, because it was his first literary experience. The book consists of 12 chapters and an epilogue.

Chapter 1

Those who have not read the novel "Rudin", a brief summary of the chapters, more precisely, parts, will make up the most complete picture of the work.

The action begins in the salon of Darya Mikhailovna Lasunskaya - landlords. She has a big house, a fortune. Once upon a time she was a famous secular lioness. According to the old habit, she still organizes the salon. On the day from which the narrative begins, Darya Mihailovna has gathered a society. Guests are waiting for the baron. He promised to acquaint the audience with his scientific discoveries.

In the novel "Rudin" the summary of the work is full of descriptions of the main characters. Almost all of them gathered that day at the landowner:

  • Bassistov, a home teacher who is assigned to Darya Mikhailovna's younger sons (9 and 10 years old);
  • Volintsev, a retired staff captain;
  • His sister, Lipina Alexandra Pavlovna, a very well-off widow;
  • Natalia, the eldest daughter of Lasunskaya, 17 years old;
  • Pandalevsky, secretary of Lasunsky;
  • Pigasov, a poor and cynical man, often attacks the female sex in conversations, all surrounding people consider this topic his "horse".

Chapter 2

Waiting for the Baron takes a long time, Lasunskaya occupies guests with conversations, the meeting goes on as usual. Pigasov criticizes the female sex, Basistov entertains children, etc. However, at the appointed time, the philosopher and scientist does not appear. The people who gathered at the landowner are somewhat upset. At this time, the footman announces that a certain Dmitry Nikolayevich Rudin has arrived.

Chapter 3

In the novel "Rudin", the summary of which is considered, the author describes only the appearance of the main character. The man who entered was very tall, with a wrong but expressive face. The clothes on it were not new and not in size. A thin voice did not match his broad chest. Rudin introduced himself as a friend of the baron, whom everyone expected, apologized for him, that he could not visit personally.

In the beginning, the conversation does not go, guests feel constrained. Lasunskaya asks the newcomer about his studies, way of life. The conversation begins to touch the article, and then Pigasov comes to life, he begins to attack "high matter" and "reasoning." A dispute begins between him and Rudin. The latter soon finds weaknesses in Pigasov's convictions and deftly points to them. The society watches with interest the conversation. All the guests are simply fascinated by Rudin's erudition and logical thinking. He is asked to talk about his student life, but he suddenly turns out to be a bad storyteller, his descriptions are pale, and jokes are not funny. Soon he goes on to general reasoning.

All the guests are delighted, except Pigasov, he is offended and leaves before the meeting ends. Darya Mihailovna reflects on how to bring the "acquisition" into the light. She persuades Rudin to stay the night. All the other guests go home, because they live nearby. But no one can fall asleep, so excited are their minds with the speeches of Dmitry Nikolaevich.

Chapter 4

In the morning, Lasunskaya calls Rudin to her office to bite her tea. She decided that he would become a "highlight" in her salon.

During tea they discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Darya Mikhaylovna's entourage. It turns out that Rudin is familiar with some, for example, with her neighbor Lezhnev, Mikhailo Mikhaylych.

At the same time, the footman reports on his arrival. However, at the meeting neither Rudin nor Lezhnev show good friends' feelings, they communicate very coldly. After the departure of his neighbor, Dmitry Nikolaevich said that he was trying to hide the lack of talent.

After tea Rudin descends into the garden and meets there Natalia, the daughter of Lasunskaya.

Chapter 5

The author describes in great detail the appearance and inner world of Natalia in the novel "Rudin", the brief content of which is considered. The girl was very pretty, and even slightly large features did not spoil the overall pleasant impression. She had a home education, she read a lot. Mother tried to follow the education and tastes of her daughter, but in fact she was not aware of true hobbies. In general, they did not understand each other very much.

Rudin begins to talk with Natalia, long and ardently preaches the need for work, says that everyone should be busy with business, disgrace laziness and cowardice of modern people. These speeches shake the girl.

However, Volyntsev does not like this interest, since he is not indifferent to the daughter of the owner of the estate. He goes to his sister and finds Lezhnev there. Mihailo Mikhaylych begins to remember the student's youth. Then they talked a lot with Rudin. Lipina did not like many episodes told by Lezhnev. He decided to stop and promised to tell something else some other time.

Chapter 6

Rudin lives with Lasunska for 2 months. During this time, she is terribly accustomed to him, in many respects advised him, in addition to managing the economy. Darya Mihailovna is delighted with her guest and believes that he will surpass all capital wits. She was used to a circle of refined and intelligent people. Rudin, in her opinion, is just from this category.

However, not all share the emotions of the hostess: Pigasov began to appear much less often, Pandalevsky seems that Rudin too much, he presses, Volynsky is jealous of Natalia.

Bassists, on the other hand, eagerly listens to Dmitry Nikolaevich's speeches, almost adoring him. However, Rudin practically does not notice the teacher.

The impression produced by the hero is very often emphasized in the work by Turgenev. Rudin, whose summary is given, gives a complete picture of the attitude towards the main person.

During this time, the house darling twice tried to leave, but borrowed money from the owners and stayed.

Most often, Natalia becomes his interlocutor. Rudin's words sink into her soul, she eagerly catches every word and becomes permeated with his ideas. She has new thoughts and feelings, she confides her secrets to the guest.

In conversations Rudin touches on various topics, including love. He argues that at present there are no strong and passionate natures, capable of experiencing the full depth of feelings. The girl thinks for a long time about his words, and then begins to cry.

Lipin, in turn, tries to find out what Rudin is. She has long been harassing Lezhnev with questions and requests for more details. He gives a very unflattering description of the hero, tells how they quarreled. According to Mikhail Mikhailovich - a bad man Rudin. The content of the novel, even a brief one, describes this point. Dmitry likes to play the role of the oracle, to speak inflammatory speeches, to live at the expense of others, but he himself does not know much about what he says, his erudition is superficial. Lezhnev believes the main drawback is that while lighting up the fire in others, Dmitry himself remains cold and does not think what consequences can befall the impressionable young people who have sunk into the ideas of the speaker.

Chapter 7

Rudin is seeking Natalia's disposition. At first he says that the ideal couple for her is Volyntsev, that he is a very worthy person, but for him there is no longer love. The witness of this conversation is the staff captain. The scene seen is unpleasant to him.

In the evening of the same day, Rudin is explained in love to Natalia and seeks recognition in return. This conversation is overheard by Pandalevsky and decides to tell about the hostess.

This is a retelling of the 7th part of the novel "Rudin", a brief summary of which is presented to your attention.

Chapter 8

Volyntsev, in despondency, locks himself. His sister sends for Lezhnev to consult how to deal with his brother.

Suddenly, Rudin comes to say that he loves Natalia, and she is his. Volyntsev wondered what all this is and considers such an announcement to be frank impudence. Rudin tries to explain his appearance by politeness, a desire to be honest. However, having arrived home, he blames himself for recklessness and boyishness.

In the evening Natalia gives him a note, in which he appoints a date.

Chapter 9

Arriving at the appointed place, Rudin saw saddened Natalia. The girl said that the mother knows everything, and that against their marriage. What will the chosen one do now, because Darya Mihailovna does not want to hear more about Rudin?

He, in turn, asks Natalia what she is going to do. Both are confused. Finally, Rudin proposes to submit to fate, so as not to separate the beloved from the family by force. Moreover, he is not rich and can hardly support his wife.

Natalia considers such an act faint-hearted and bitterly disappointed in her chosen one. They are arguing. Rudin believes that he is worthless before the girl.

The inner experiences of the hero are transmitted by nature Turgenev. Rudin, whose summary is given, is full of colorful descriptions of nature.

Chapter 10

Volyntsev decides to call Rudin to a duel, but then a letter comes from the latter. This is a verbose explanation of the fact that the author does not intend to justify himself and the notice of departure.

Chapter 11

Rudin went into Darya Mihailovna's office and informed her that he had to leave, allegedly because of bad news from his village. A sudden decision surprised everyone in the house, Basistov was frankly upset. Rudin left a long letter to Natalia, which she read and burst into tears. However, she did not show her feelings to anyone. Life in the estate returned to its original course.

As Turgenev shows, Rudin feels miserable when leaving.

Chapter 12

It's been 2 years. Lipina married Lezhnev, they had a baby. Natalia agreed to marry Volyntseva. It was about Rudin, little is heard of him.

As Turgenev depicts, Rudin almost completely disappeared from the life of this society.

On the same day, the culprit goes on a country road. However, there are no horses at the station. But you can go the other way. Rudin agrees.

Epilogue

The novel "Rudin", the brief content of which gives only a brief idea of the sufferings of the hero, ends with an epilogue.

A few years later, Rudin and Lezhnev meet in the hotel. Both here are passing through and must soon leave each to their side. They decide to have lunch together. Rudin begins to talk about himself. He has already changed many places of work: he was a home secretary, an ameliorator, a teacher. However, whatever he did, he was always in for a failure. He even began to feel that he was being pursued by an evil fate, an unhappy fate.

Lezhnev does not console his comrade, but he does not criticize either. Perhaps, he says, Rudin fulfills his highest mission - to stir up a passion in his heart, fight for truth, convince others of it.

The novel "Rudin" ends tragically. July 26, 1848 in Paris, when the uprising of the "national workshops" was almost suppressed, the troops took one of the last barricades. Defenders of her, who felt an early defeat and lost their courage, fled. Suddenly a tall, gray-haired man with a banner in his hands appeared at the top. A moment later, he fell face down: the bullet passed through the heart.

"They killed the Pole!" Someone shouted. This Pole was Dmitry Rudin. A brief description of his doom is given by the author.
