By the way, the Ulyanovsk plant began its existence in the autumn of 1941. It was then that military vehicles began to be produced on it. But at the same time he underwent a slight change, due to which he found the external position of the reducer. Despite the carrying capacity of 1 ton, the suspension on the car was spring (even at the 469th UAZ it was of a spring type), dependent type. But here we can note one plus - this car had a more smooth and soft move. All these and many other changes allowed to increase the ground clearance of UAZ by several centimeters (now the ground clearance was 33 centimeters). From the conveyor all UAZ-3172 were equipped with a special air intake, located just above the body. This feature allowed the car to easily overcome water obstacles up to 2 meters deep.

The car was equipped with a newly developed carburetor engine with a capacity of 100 horsepower and a working capacity of 2.9 liters. At 2000 rpm it is able to develop a torque of 200 Nm. The fuel consumption was not more than 16 liters per 100 kilometers of run. Also in special cases, the installation of a turbo-diesel engine of the UMZ brand was planned. In this case, the consumption of diesel fuel was not more than 14 liters. The maximum speed of UAZ-3172 is 130 kilometers per hour.
