The Reverend Angelina of Serbia (Brankovic)

Before we know when the Orthodox name-days of Angelina are celebrated, we will learn some details about the life of Angelina of Serbia. Her name is Brankovic. It belonged to an ancient family of rulers of Montenegro, which suddenly fell under the rule of the Turks.

A little time will pass after the famous Kosovo battle of 1389, when the 25,000-strong Serb army, together with its allies, will be defeated by the 40,000-strong army of Turks.

Name Angelina - a very important date, with her name is associated with many holy names and events, because she survived her husband and two sons, they all were listed as saints.

Saint Stefan the Blind

Her husband was the last Serbian ruler Stephen Blind, with whom she was married in 1461. He was described as a worthy and wise man who knew the Bible well. He was not blind from birth, this was preceded by a whole event.

When his sister Maru got into the harem to the Turkish sultan Murad II, Stefan went with her to Turkey with her older brother. There they were suspected of conspiracy and blinded.

Mara

With Mara another very surprising story is connected, she - the queen of Serbia - became the only woman who entered Mount Athos. It was she who came there to convey the shrines that were captured by the Turks in Constantinople.

There is such a tradition that the Queen of Heaven herself and the patroness of the monastic Athonite monastery warned her not to enter the holy land. Mara obeyed and transferred all the gifts through noble people, and then sailed.

Exile

However, let's return again to Serbia, their ruler Stefan Blind was not in power for long. He was soon slandered, and he was forced to flee from the wrath of his compatriots. Together with his family he first went to Albania, then to Italy, where he lived for 10 years. Angelina was always with him, during this time she gave birth to him three children: the sons of Juraj and Jovan and daughter Maru.

In 1476, after his death, Stefan left no will, but began to ask support for his wife Angelina and children from the people of the Sicilian city of Ragusa, where they then lived.

In 1486, the Hungarian ruler managed to move Angelina to Hungary in the village of Kupinovo, where she was able to transport her husband's coffin. According to the legend, when the husband's coffin was brought to the temple, a hunchbacked man was healed . The relics of Stefan the Blind were imperishable, and his name became holy.

The Fates of Sons

Angelina Juraj's eldest son was first ruled by Hungarian Serbs and even married to Isabella - an Italian and a relative of the Hungarian Queen Beatrice, but then the marriage broke up on religious grounds. In 1497, Djuraj took monastic vows with the name of Maxim.

Then the power passed to his younger brother Jovan, but he soon died (in 1502). He did not have any heirs, since his wife Elena Yakshich (the uncircumcised relative of the Russian Tsar Vasily III) gave him only daughters. He, too, was ranked as a saint.

After the death of Jovan Angelina together with Maxim moved to Wallachia (now it is Romanian land). They took with them the holy relics of Stefan and Jovan.

Maxim began to wisely govern the Church of Wallachia and was able to reconcile the warring princes of Wallachia and Moldavia, and also to create the first printing house.

Later he will receive the order of the Metropolitan of Belgrade-Sremsky and create the famous monastery monastery Krushedol, where he will be buried in 1516.

Name days Angelina

Now, at last, we come to the most important thing. However, a little more information is needed to give a full answer to the question of when the Angelina's birthday party is.

After the death of her second son, Angelina gave everything she had to the poor and also took monastic vows, and at the end of her life became abbess of the monastery next to Krushedol. She was engaged in the construction of churches and charity and always asked for help from the monasteries of the Russian Tsar Vasily III, which she never refused. In 1520 she peacefully departed to the Lord. The relics of her whole holy family were laid in her monastery.

But in 1716 the Turks burned this monastery and the relics were destroyed. However, some parts remained, and they are now kept in the restored abode of Krushedol (Serbia).

In the Orthodox saints name-day Angelina are celebrated on July 14 and December 23.
