The development of the resort area as a recreational area for St. Petersburg began in the middle of the century before last.

The construction of the railway tracks, stretching all over the Karelian Isthmus, was a strong factor that made these lands a dacha zone for the upper strata of society. History

The territory that occupies the resort area of St. Petersburg, in the old days was occupied by the Finnish people. In the thirteenth century, she fell under the sway of Sweden. After the end of the Northern War, residents of the Swedish part of Karelia became subjects of the Russian Empire, and the border area shifted northward, beyond Vyborg. And only in 1811-1812 the Vyborg gubernia again entered the land of the Autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. Until the 1940s, the border between Finland and Russia lay along the Sestra River.

Geographical location

The climatic conditions are very different in the territory occupied by Russia. St. Petersburg (The resort area is located in the north-western part, along the shore of the Gulf of Finland) is not the most environmentally friendly city, but these places can be called "light" megapolis. The local climate has marine properties - with a humid wet summer and a long, moderately cold winter. The usual temperature in July is 18 degrees, in January - minus 8. The coldest month is February. Snow usually appears here in November and is present until the middle of April. Spring in the region is belated and long, and the summer is mild and warm, with varying then sunny, rainy days. Autumn is rather cloudy and foggy. Bathe on the coast of the Gulf of Finland from early July until the end of August. At the same time, the water is cool enough, its usual temperature in July is 20 degrees.

Natural and medicinal advantages of the region

It is possible to single out the main natural and health factors of the area:

• Pleasant marine climate;
• The presence of sodium chloride (in Sestroretsk) and chloride-hydrocarbonate calcium-sodium water (in Zelenogorsk);
• Rare sapropelic mud;
• Beautiful natural infrastructure: an abundance of forests, a sandy beach and numerous lakes.

The Gulf of Finland and pine groves create a healthy microclimate in the Kurortny district, filling the air with negative ions and phytoncides. This area is quite promising in all respects. For example, Sestroretsk resort is one of the unique health resorts of the country, it is due to the presence here of amazing mud in its way, called "gittium clay". This mud solution is used as a separate remedy (it can be used for lotions, baths, physiotherapy procedures and for some other purposes). Also, the Sestroretsky resort is famous for its park of century-old pine trees, sand dunes, a wide clean beach, and the presence of radon mineral waters.
