Radiation safety - protection against ionizing radiation

Radiation safety is a set of measures that are directed at protecting a person, various populations and objects from the effects of ionizing rays. All actions are aimed at creating optimal conditions for the use of various radiation sources in treatment and other areas without harming people's health.

Radiation safety also concerns the development of criteria for assessing the different types of this negative radiation. It should be noted that a number of radiobiological experiments are under way, in which the effect of ionizing rays on living organisms and their systems is studied. In addition, experts determine the health status of people who work in hazardous conditions, as well as those who have been exposed to radiation. The greatest attention is drawn to the relationship between the intensity of radiation and its side effect on the body.

An equivalent dose is used as a parameter that indicates the severity of the negative effect when exposed to ionizing radiation . It should be noted that the norms of this indicator are specified in special legislative documents.

Radiation safety of the population involves the development of methods for assessing and predicting the effects of atomic energy. This helps to ensure normal living and working conditions for people, as well as protect the environment from ionizing rays.

The characteristic of various sources of radiation is given, regularities, scales and character of distribution of radioactive substances are studied .

This allows you to choose the optimal means of protection, create optimal working conditions, and, if necessary, establish a special sanitary-access regime.

Radiation safety fulfills one more important task - it creates an effective dosimetry monitoring system, which is carried out with the help of special instruments and calculation methods.

Its main tasks can also include:

• Reduction of the level of irradiation;

• the creation of a radiation monitoring system that allows timely detection of certain violations and eliminating them.

The set of measures that are taken to reduce radiation exposure depends on the nature of the technological process of using radioactive substances. In addition, the type of designation of nuclear power plants plays an important role, which, in doing so, is applied. Thus, radiation safety when working with closed sources of ionizing rays is directed to protection from external radiation fluxes. In the production or processing of such substances, measures are taken to prevent their spread to the environment and to enter living organisms.

I must say that there is such a thing as medical radiobiology. It is a complex discipline that studies the use of ionizing radiation in medicine and includes clinical radiobiology, radiotherapy, radionuclide diagnostics, radiation hygiene. It is worth noting that medical radiology and radiation safety are closely related, since only accurate and accurate irradiation dosage allows to conduct correct diagnostics and receive a positive therapeutic effect.
