Proper and safe sterilization of cans at home

Such work as sterilization of cans at home requires a lot of effort and time from the hostess, and especially during the season of mass procurement. This procedure is performed for the purpose of disinfection from pathogens, because only in a sterile container any products will not only be stored for a long time, but at the same time they will preserve their taste and benefits to the maximum. And today there are several ways to sterilize cans:

  • ferry;
  • With the help of household appliances;
  • Medical alcohol;
  • Acetic acid;
  • By boiling.

Literally until recently, it was the sterilization of cans of steam that was the most popular. Banks either put on a teapot spout, or they made a special sterilizer from a tank or a small pot, in the lid of which a round hole was cut with a size just over the throat of the can. And it was into him that they put the packaging. But this method is quite traumatic, because removing banks, you can get a burn, and besides, banks can burst. Therefore, it is not surprising that sterilization of cans at home is almost always done in other ways today.

So, one of them is boiling. In a deep pan, water is poured into which cans and lids are placed. After that, it is closed and put on the gas, where from the boiling point there is still about 15-30 minutes, depending on the volume of the container. At the end of the time, the dishes are removed from the pan and you can immediately put food in, but after removing the remaining water from the cans.

It has been quite a long time and, it is worth noting, this procedure is very successful in a gas oven. The big plus is that it can be placed as wet cans, and dry. The only difference is that the dry container is put on a pallet down the neck, and wet on the contrary. The process itself is very simple: the banks are put on a tray and placed in a cold oven, then turn on the gas and set the temperature to 150 degrees. After this time the oven is turned off, but the door can be opened only after 5 minutes, otherwise the dishes can burst. The total time of sterilization of cans depends on their volume: liter cans are sterilized for 15 minutes, half liter for 10 minutes, 3-liter for 25 minutes. This method is also convenient because it does not require the constant attention of the hostess, and the number of cans that can be placed in the oven at a time depends only on its size.

Sterilization of cans at home in the microwave is by and large analogous to the previous method. The only difference is that you can put only dry containers in it, and the sterilization time decreases by 5 minutes for each kind of cans, respectively.

Some landladies have very successfully used medical alcohol or 70% vinegar to disinfect cans. In this case, 100 ml of the selected liquid is poured into the cans, covered with a lid and within a couple of minutes the jar should be shaken violently. After that, the liquid is poured into the next jar, and the lid is again wiped with cotton wool soaked in alcohol or vinegar. Perform this procedure only in gloves, so as not to get burned.

But do not forget that sterilization of cans at home by any of the above methods will be effective only if they are carefully prepared. First of all, all containers and lids are thoroughly washed with soda or laundry soap, checked for chips and cracks, and if any, the jar should not be used. The same applies to the lids, if there are scratches or rust on their surface, then they should be discarded.

In any case, the proper sterilization of the cans helps to keep the workpieces for a long time without losing the taste of the product.
