Plastic curb for the bathroom: installation and installation

To ensure that after laying the tiles bath, and the room itself looked neat and attractive, on the joints of the tile and other elements of the room a special plinth is laid. There are two main types of curbs, one of which is made in the form of a self-adhesive tape, and the second is a plinth made in the form of a corner. The latter option, as a rule, is much cheaper, as it is made of plastic, which in itself has a low price.

Such plastic curbs for the bath (photos can be seen in the article) serve not only as decorative elements, but also excellent sealing for joints, which protects the junction from moisture and dirt. As a result, you get rid of the need to wipe the floor every time after taking a shower.

Border for bathroom self-adhesive

A similar curb, made in the form of a silicone tape, has a self-adhesive base, which is attached to the surfaces of the bath and the wall. This curb has all the characteristics of a classical skirting board, but is made of soft silicone, which allows you to install it without any extra efforts. In this case, use this option is relevant in the case if the bath is well fixed, and the gap between it and the wall surface is rather narrow.

At the same time, the installation of such a border does not require the use of an adhesive, except when the adhesive on the base of the tape is not suitable for the type of material to which the plinth is attached. In this case, if the purchase has already been made, in principle, you can clean the base of the ribbon curb from the glue available on it and fix it to a more suitable adhesive.

In addition, for the self-adhesive border does not require the use of silicone sealant, since the skirting board itself sufficiently seals the joint. Unfortunately, such a curb, as a rule, does not have a very long service life, so it is used as a temporary option. Another unpleasant moment is the cost of this skirting board, which is quite high.

What are good curbs in the form of a corner?

In addition to its low cost, the plastic curb for the bathroom has a number of advantages, which often incline the scales in his favor.

So, there is no already applied glue on the skirting board, therefore you can choose the most suitable composition, which is applicable for your operating conditions. In this case, scraping the "native" glue is not necessary, as often happens when using self-adhesive tape.

In addition, curbs for the bathroom plastic in the form of a corner are very useful even in cases where, as a result of installation, the gap between the wall and the edge of the washing container is quite wide.

The skirting from a self-adhesive tape such a crack is unlikely to close, and even if it turns out to cover the gap, then, most likely, such a curb will quickly peel off.

The plastic curb for the bath adds extra rigidity to the fixation of the bath, while it is almost not exposed to vibrations and high humidity.

Varieties of plastic curbs

A plastic curb is mainly made of PVC, which has a number of properties that make its use the most preferred option.

The plinth is made of plastic in a variety of colors, which allows you to choose the most suitable option for the bathroom interior. In addition, the material of execution makes it possible to manufacture products with different texture, as well as convex, concave, with a pattern or single-color.

In case the tub has an oval or round shape, you can purchase a plastic border, which has high flexibility. Some manufacturers produce a plinth with rubberized edges, which provides an increased sealing joints. In this case, the plastic curb for the bath is not necessary to use only for this container, the plinth is perfect for shells.

Basically, skirting boards with a length of 180 cm and dimensions of 25 x 25 mm or 50 x 50 mm are used for installation. In this case, the package usually contains 35 pieces of such skirting boards.

Which glue should I choose for fixing the angle?

On how well the glue is selected, it will depend not only the strength of the curb fixation, but also the appearance of the final finish.

The first rule: choose transparent sealants, because during the installation the glue can protrude beyond the skirting. Excess adhesive solution is removed with white spirit and knife, more aggressive solvents are able to spoil the curb, and the procedure must be carried out when the glue has already risen, but has not yet dried completely. With a solvent, the adhesive is softened, and the knife is scraped off the surface of the wall or bath.

The second rule: apply glue, corresponding to the type of the base. That is, if you fasten the border to an acrylic bath, choose a glue for plastic, as well as an adhesive solution for wall panels or vinyl.

The third rule: use a glue with a quick grasp, as by mounting a plastic curb for the bathroom on the tile, It has to be held until the glue comes out first.

Preparation of the base for mounting skirting boards

In the event that once a plastic curb for the bathroom has already been installed, it must be removed and the surface cleaned of the old adhesive. After that, the edge of the bath and the adjacent wall are cleaned of dirt with the help of detergent liquid, thoroughly rinsed with water and dried. Drying is best done with paper disposable towels, which wipe the surface until it becomes dry. After that, the bath and the wall are degreased with the same white spirit or gasoline. The same applies to the situation when the bath was installed long ago, and mud gathered on the edges.

The gap is isolated with the help of silicone sealant, which is applied before installing the plastic curbs in the form of a corner.

Curb Editing Methods

If you have chosen to decorate a plastic curb for a bathroom, the installation can take place in two ways.

You can install skirting during the laying of the tile, then the upper edge of the curb is put under the edge of the lower row of ceramic panels. This gives additional strength and waterproofing to the execution of the plinth.

If the wall covering is already ready and as a decoration chosen the border for the bathroom plastic, installation It is carried out on top of ceramic tiles in compliance with the gluing technology.

Materials and tools that will be required to install plastic skirting boards

In principle, it will take quite a few tools to conduct a quality curb installation:

  • Silicone sealant, which is designed to isolate the gap between the wall and the bathroom. It is best to choose a special sanitary compound that contains additives that prevent the appearance of mold and fungus on its surface.
  • Pistol for applying sealant, foam or liquid nails.
  • Roulette for measuring the required dimensions.
  • Paint tape for gluing to the surface of the bath to avoid damage to the coating during installation work.
  • The curb itself in an amount sufficient for finishing. In this case, take into account the material in reserve, because the plinth will in some cases be cut. Additional raw materials are determined from the calculation of 10-15% of the main material.
  • Hacksaw for metal for cutting plinth.
  • Rubber spatula for smoothing sealant on the seam.
  • White spirit for cleaning plinths and bath surfaces.

Installation of plastic curbs

First of all, measure the bath with a tape measure and mark the required length on the skirting board. The plastic curb for the bath is sawn in a piece of hacks into pieces, corresponding to the marking, after which the edges are cut at an angle of 45 degrees.

Before fixing the plinth to the surface, you need to check how it fits together and how exactly the dimensions of the plastic curb for the bath are. To do this, the skirting board is laid out in places and the joints are checked for coincidence.

After that, pressing each piece to the bath, on top and below it at a distance of 2 mm paste the painting tape. Remove the curb, as a result, should remain two strips of paint tape - one on the wall, the second on the bath. The container itself is covered with dense polyethylene to avoid contamination.

Features of gluing the curb

With the help of a gun, the chosen adhesive solution is applied to the joint site so that the glue strip passes between the two lines of the paint tape.

Lay a curb for the bathroom plastic on the wall panel and the container itself and lightly press against both surfaces. Now it is important to ensure uniform pressing of the piece of skirting around the joint for about 20 minutes, which can be done with the help of improvised tools or call an assistant.

If such a procedure can not be carried out, it is possible to act in a different way. 10 minutes after applying the glue, the border is pressed against the surface with a slight force. In this case, for sure will come excess solution, which after 20 minutes after setting the adhesive must be removed with the help of white spirit or gasoline. But before removing the glue, remove the paint tape.

Sealing joints

To protect the joints from the ingress of water in them, as a rule, a white sealant is used, although nobody forbids to choose the color most suitable for the interior of the bathroom. In this case, pay attention to the plasticity of the silicone sealant, since the appearance of the finish depends on this property. If a new canister is used or the old one is well laid, it is usually at the top of the tank that it is almost dry. It is better not to use such a sealant, as it will badly lie in the joints, and not only will look sloppy, but will not fulfill its sealing function.

On the edges of the curb again pasting the paint tape at a distance of 2 mm, so as not to subsequently clean the walls and bath also from the sealant. Extrude the silicone at the joint, trying to fill the entire gap to the maximum. In this case, consider that if the wall is laid tile, then at its junctions also have their own seams, which also need to be filled with sealant.

After all the voids are filled, with a rubber spatula or at the very least with your finger, you need to smooth the sealant along the baseboard. Similarly, the joint is sealed at the bottom edge of the curb.

Lastly, the paint tape and excess sealant are removed.

Final works

After installing the first curbs for a bath of PVC, the plinth for A plastic tub must be mounted around the perimeter of the room, following the above described technology. In doing so, do not forget before gluing the baseboard to check the coincidence of the trimmed ends of the skirting.

After the completion of all work, carefully inspect the seams for poor-quality sealing and, if necessary, apply the sealant again. Now check the surface of the bath and the wall for the remaining surpluses of the solutions used, if any, remove with white spirit. Leave the bath to finally set the adhesive for a day, then wash all surfaces with a liquid detergent and rinse with clean water.

In general, it's all about installing and installing a plastic skirting board. Now you can use the bathroom with a new plastic curb.
