Planting peonies in the fall: how to do it right

The most honorable place in the garden, as well as in the country, has always been and will be occupied by flowers. And one of the most beloved plant growers is the right to peony. Usually it blooms abundantly and luxuriantly at the very end of spring. That is why it became a traditional gift to school teachers on the last call. However, to obtain such flowers, a necessary condition is the planting of peonies in autumn, which requires special attention and careful care, because these delicate plants will have to survive the cold winter.

Despite the fact that it is simple enough to grow a flower, caring for it has always caused a lot of questions from inexperienced gardeners. Most often they ask: what are the terms of planting pions, when to cut them, and when to transplant, what to do with plants after their flowering.

Peonies are perennials that spend the whole winter in the soil. Since they are perennial, it requires special preparation of a place for their planting and careful selection of the site. The most favorable for their growth is sunny places. It should be remembered that even a slight shade can completely eliminate any possibility of their flowering. Planting pions in autumn requires well-drained loams as soil. In the case when the groundwater is very close to the surface of the earth, peonies are usually planted on small ridges.

A distinctive feature of pions is their exceptional frost resistance. They easily withstand the cold to -40 and the spring temperature drops to -8 degrees. If the horticulturist properly manages the planting pit and annually makes necessary fertilizers, the peonies can grow in one place for up to ten years, without requiring a transplant.

Planting pions in the autumn requires special preparation. For a start, a pit of certain sizes is excavated: 60x60x60. It is best to prepare it from the middle of summer. It is filled with a certain soil mixture, consisting of a kilogram of mineral fertilizers, 2 parts of the earth, one part of sand and two parts of humus.

The flowers are propagated throughout the first half of the autumn by dividing the bush and transplanting the seedlings into a new permanent place. For this, the old bush is watered abundantly, after which the gardener carefully digs it, rinses the whole earth off the rhizomes and cuts it with a very sharp knife so that at least 3-4 buds remain on each individual seedling.

Planting pions in autumn requires leaving growth buds at ground level. On top of them it will be necessary to cover a thin layer of fertile soil and mulch, after which it is abundantly watered. Mulch will provide the necessary drainage and give the plant a constant supply of necessary nutrients and heat.

Another interesting feature of this plant is its excellent resistance to diseases and pests. Flowers peonies, planting and care for which are fairly simple, very rarely get sick, but for the prevention they should be periodically sprayed with 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid and other drugs.

Today peonies occupy a place of honor among other flowers, both in the garden and in the country. They are ideal for creating flower beds and beautiful alpine hills in the form of group or single planting.
