Pain in the epigastric region

Pain in the epigastric region is a very common symptom that can disturb a person, but it is not always clear what causes it caused.

People who are not related to medicine often do not know how the organs are positioned relative to each other in the abdominal cavity. That is why it is very difficult for them to understand which organ causes abdominal pain.

Pain in the epigastric region can be caused by a disease of the stomach or the 12th gut. For example, gastritis is an inflammatory process of the gastric mucosa that causes pain immediately after ingestion. Pain in gastritis can be severe and weak - it depends on the extent of the lesion. Treatment of gastritis is mainly a diet that excludes the reception of spicy, fatty, smoked and fried foods. This disease is well compensated and with proper nutrition can not disturb the patient for a long time.

Ulcers of the stomach and the 12th intestine can also provoke pain in the epigastric region, however its character will be slightly different from the pains with gastritis. During the peptic ulcer exacerbation the pain is very intense, cutting, can radiate into the left arm or under the shoulder blade. Very often such pains are confused with cardiac. Such bouts of pain occur after a while after eating, when food is evacuated from the stomach and the 12th intestine and the bottom of the ulcer is exposed (when it gets gastric juice, pain occurs). In addition to the pain syndrome, patients complain of stool, dyspepsia and fever. Treatment of peptic ulcer is complex and is carried out depending on the size of the defect, the presence of concomitant pathology and the severity of the process.

The pancreas (more precisely, its head) is also located in the epigastric region, but often provokes pain in the right side of the abdomen. If the pathological process affects most of the gland, the pain will be shrouded in nature. The intensity of the pain syndrome depends on the form of the disease. In acute form of pain will be sharp and intense, paroxysmal. The chronic form of inflammation of the pancreas is characterized by constant aching blunt pains. In this case, against the background of the painful syndrome, there is a digestive disorder, the temperature rises, the patients feel weakness and malaise. The treatment of such patients is performed in the gastroenterology department.

Diseases of the liver can also cause pain in the epigastric region, but such pains will still be given to the right side, and this sign can be suspected that the liver is "stingy". After a number of diagnostic methods, it is easy to identify the cause of the pain syndrome. However, very often the pain is caused not by one cause, but by several.

Few people know that pain in the epigastric region can be caused by myocardial infarction or aortic aneurysm. Very rarely cardiovascular pathology is under the guise of gastroenterological diseases, but this does happen. And in this situation, the main thing is to find out the infarction. During the development of myocardial infarction a person becomes covered with a sticky sweat, turns pale, the pain grows and is not stopped by nitroglycerin. Such patients need urgent hospitalization in the intensive care unit.

Pain in the epigastric region can be caused by a diaphragmatic hernia or an accumulation of effusion in the pleural cavity. If these diseases actually take place, then the doctor palpatorically and with the help of percussion will determine the localization of the process.

If the pain is worried for several days, increases or additional symptoms are added to it, then it is necessary to consult a doctor and pass some diagnostic tests. Do not engage in self-medication and try folk remedies, from some of them it only gets worse.
