Oils for two-stroke boat motors - basic types and qualities

Qualitative oils for two-stroke boat motors are able to prolong the life of the engine of the boat for a long time. The use of suitable lubricants does not give a chance for the development of corrosion and allows the traction unit to function at maximum rpm.

Distributors strongly recommend the use of a certain oil for two-stroke boat motors of a particular brand. It is quite natural that the more expensive the engine, the more specific lubricant is required for its maintenance.

How to follow the above approach correctly? Perhaps it makes sense to limit the use of standard engine oil? After all, the options offered by reputable manufacturers cost much more. Let's try to understand these issues.

Functions

The functions of any lubricant base include:

  • Reduction of friction between mobile components of the engine system;
  • Prevention of premature wear of parts, appearance of scuffing;
  • Protection of mechanisms from the effects of environmental factors, in particular, the development of corrosion processes;
  • Effective removal of heat from contacting parts.

Certification

Oils for two-cycle boat motors must contain the marking TC-W3. The latter is protected by international patent law and confirms the high quality of lubricants. The bulk of the world's leading manufacturers of push-pull engines - Yamaha, Suzuki, Tohatsu, Honda - indicate the need for oils that have this certification.

The main requirement of the TC-W3 standard is the absence of additives with metal anion content in the lubricant for the motor. In other words, the lubricant must be made using ashless additives.

The use of oils that have not been certified in accordance with the standard increases the risk of carbon deposits on the ignition elements of a two-stroke engine, leading to rapid wear of the piston group. In the end, a frivolous approach to servicing the engine causes its final jamming.

Primary requirements

What kind of oil for two-cycle boat motors to choose? Lubricant must meet the following requirements:

  1. Minimal ash content - when using a two-stroke engine, complete combustion of the oil is welcomed.
  2. Ideal solubility in fuel.
  3. Presence of good lubricating, anticorrosive, temperature qualities.
  4. High level of fluidity - the characteristic is important when using lubricant in engines with separate oil supply.
  5. Rapid decomposition into separate components when ingested.

Composition

Oils for two-stroke boat motors are medium viscosity substances. The oil base itself accounts for about 60% of the finished product. From 5 to 17% of the volume, depending on the manufacturer, is the so-called vacuum residue, which is the result of primary distillation of petroleum products. This component gives the oil excellent lubricity due to increased plasticity.

About 20% of the volume of the final product is occupied by solvents, which play the role of activators, which help the lubricant to mix better with fuel. The remaining substances are additives that are used to reduce the effect of waste oil fumes.

Mineral grease or synthetics?

It starts with the fact that the lubricating bases for two-stroke boat engines are synthetic and mineral. In view of the low cost, most owners of motorized boats are inclined towards the latter option.

Is it rational to use mineral lubricants instead of "synthetics" to serve two-stroke engines? It is usually better to use oils recommended by the engine manufacturer. Filling synthetic bases in the engines of the old model, it is often necessary to deal with regular leaks, since such a lubricant has a high level of fluidity. And to the contrary, in models of boat engines designed to use synthetic oils, mineral bases often behave badly.

For reasons of economy, an alternative solution in the form of a semi-synthetic lubricant can be used to service two-stroke engines. The latter is a mixture of "mineral water" and "synthetics". It is only natural that the quality of such oils is average. However, the savings will be pretty decent.

Motul oil for two-stroke outboard motors

Lubricants of the authoritative brand "Motul" are in high demand among owners of boats with two-stroke engines. What are the advantages of using such a lubricant?

This engine oil for two-stroke boat motors is completely burned in the engine. As a result of its use, no waste components are formed, which can lead to clogging of the oil mesh, accumulating on its surface.

Suitable oil for a two-stroke Yamaha boat engine, other highly efficient engine brands, which are subject to increased requirements.

The lubricant fulfills the tasks on the basis of the mixing principle. The oil enters the combustion chamber in a mix with fuel. This solution seems to be the most rational for servicing two-stroke engines, since in the latter a combined fuel mixing system is implemented.

Finally

When the boat owner faces a difficult choice of engine oil for two-stroke boat motors, it is rational to consult with more experienced owners who have experience of long-term operation of a similar engine.

Often the rational way to choose the best lubricant for servicing the boat engine is the use of the trial and error method. This is the only way to evaluate each oil and find an effective solution for the existing engine.
