Miniature, cozy, atmospheric - such is Nerekhta, located in the Kostroma region. The sights of the village, which remain in excellent condition, attract tourists here year after year. It is not surprising that he belongs to the number of cities belonging to the Little Golden Ring. So, what to see, being in this ancient place?

A bit of history

The twelfth century is the time when it first appeared in the chronicles of Nerekhta, whose sights today serve as a magnet for curious travelers. The first record dates back to 1214, from which you can find out that the heirs of Vsevolod the Big Nest fought for the city.

Not only internal wars happened to survive this settlement, Nerekhta sustained and the Tatars' attack that happened in the 13th century. The first monastery in its territory was built by Pakhomi, a disciple of Radonezh. If you believe the annals, the construction was completed in 1365. It is interesting that in this Pakhomiev-Nerekhtinsky monastery you can pray in our days. It is also known that this city was visited by Peter the Great once, during his first and last visit the autocrat was still a small boy.

Nerehta: sights of the city

St. Nicholas Church - the spiritual stronghold of the city, having a difficult history. In 1710, Nerekhta acquired this temple, whose sights are famous for their antiquity. Historians are still debating whether the merchant's donations allowed the church to be built. The names of Simonov, Zimin are called. The wall mural was answered by the famous masters Shustovs.

A difficult period came for the temple in 1931, when it was turned into a warehouse. Its former status of an ancient church found only fifty years later, restoration work was carried out. Fortunately, it was possible to save valuable frescoes, dating back to the 18th century, to restore the former appearance to the gilded seven-meter iconostasis. The legend says that the person calling the church bells clears the soul of filth.

At the moment, the stone church no longer holds services. It is turned into a museum, which everyone can visit.

The Vladimir Church

The religious city is Nerekhta, the sights of the village are primarily temples. Tourists who have found themselves here must certainly see the Vladimir Church. Its construction was completed in 1686, it happened thanks to the donations of the co-rulers Peter and Fedor Romanovs. The church is interesting not only for its antiquity, but also for its originality, it is two-pillar. Wall painting was completed in 1775.

Once the temple was part of the Sretensky maiden monastery, established in the city in 1634, but it was destroyed in the 30s of the last century. Only in 2004 the church reopened its doors for believers, as well as the shrines confiscated many years ago.

Kazan Cathedral

The Kazan Cathedral is another ancient religious building, which the city of Nerekhta is rightly proud of (its sights are described in this article). The construction of the temple was completed in 1713. In the first half of the 19th century the cathedral acquired a 60-meter bell tower, which was perfectly preserved.

After the revolution, the temple's activities were discontinued. By decree of the new government it was turned into a bread-baking plant, this status has remained unchanged in our days. For many years, there has been talk about restoration, but for the time being there are no funds for the work. When visiting this place, you should certainly climb the observation bell tower, from which a charming view of the city opens.

The Varvara Church

What other attractions of Nerekhta (Kostroma region) deserve attention? Once in this place, you should definitely see the Varvara Church. The author of the project in the spirit of baroque became the famous architect Stepan Vorotilov. The stone church was erected in the late 18th century. The church from afar attracts attention with rich decoration, the architect generously endowed it with decorative elements.

The work of the temple was also banned after the revolution, the services were not conducted for more than fifty years. In 1983-95, it was restored, reopened for the parishioners.

It is interesting that Vorotilov built another bright city landmark - the Ilyinsky temple. The architecture is in the spirit of the late Baroque. In the years of the Soviet Union, the church was used as a mechanical workshop. After its disintegration, restoration work was carried out, then the church was returned to the believers.

Of course, not only religious buildings Nerekhta is famous, photos of whose sights can be seen in this article. The city acquired its trade rows in 1823, construction work took about three years. The author of the project was the architect Metlin.

Trade rows were already going to open for residents of the village, when significant errors were discovered during construction. There were justifiable doubts about the strength of the building, in order to avoid accidents, its putting into operation was postponed for several more years. Perestroika was completed only in 1837, after which, at last, the opening of the building took place.

Interesting houses

What other tourist attractions Nerehta can offer? The description of the house, once owned by the merchant Khvorinov, traditionally includes a reference to the nickname that the building was awarded by local life. The house-sock is what the building is called in the people, which is connected with its original form. The building should be seen already for the sake of the facade decoration, executed in the spirit of early classicism.

It is interesting that in this house once had a chance to rest the Emperor Paul the First, who visited the city during a trip from Kazan to Yaroslavl. About whether the building liked the building, history is silent.

The house of the Dyakonovs also deserves the attention of the guests of Nerekhta. Many years ago it was the property of a rich merchant dynasty. This building attracts interest with its monumentality, rich in facade decoration. Unusual looking and small side mezzanines, tall arched windows.
