Mirror panel on self-adhesive basis: basic features and installation features

Today there is a huge selection of all kinds of modern finishing materials that help create an original and unique interior. Among them, a mirror panel is especially distinguished on a self-adhesive basis. It perfectly decorates any room, without requiring a large cost.

Description

To ordinary mirrors, all have long been accustomed to, and this detail of the interior is considered quite ordinary. Quite different is their version, which are mirror panels. They have a special shape, there are no chamfers around the edges, and processing, carried out using special technology, gives them a decent appearance and maximum safety. Mirror self-adhesive panels are sheets of polystyrene or glass with a layer of metallized amalgam and glue base applied to one side. Their sizes are different and make up to five square meters. Decorative facets, supplementing some panels, allow creating an original relief pattern. This finishing material perfectly fits in almost any interior.

Purpose of mirror panels

Used for wall or ceiling decoration, the reflecting surfaces perform primarily a decorative function. They are widely used in residential areas, as well as in trade halls, shops, offices. It is difficult to imagine a nightclub or a restaurant without such finishing. In small shops selling clothes or shoes, mirror wall panels on a self-adhesive basis allow you to visually increase the space and range. This is a very good option for small rooms. Due to the high reflectivity of the panels, it is enough to install small spotlights to illuminate the room.

Characteristics and advantages

A wide application in the interior design has found a mirror plastic due to its undoubted advantages in relation to other materials. Unlike a conventional mirror, it is much lighter, more flexible, so it is quite simply fixed not only on the walls or the ceiling, but also on round columns and suspended structures.

Plastic is a very strong material, capable of withstanding severe impacts and chemical effects, without deforming from time and for many years retaining its appearance. Mirror panel on a self-adhesive basis has a perfectly flat surface, which, after installation, does not require grouts, polishes or other similar types of work.

To decorate a bathroom or a swimming pool, you can choose a special waterproof panel. Simplicity of installation and compatibility with other materials makes it very easy to install this coating on any flat surface. To look after the mirror panels is also quite simple: for this it is enough to wipe them from time to time with a soft cloth with any detergent that does not contain abrasives.

Types of panels

Glass or polystyrene can be used as a basis. Mirror panels on a self-adhesive basis, made of glass, have only one serious drawback - too much weight. But they are more resistant to moisture, temperature changes, various mechanical and chemical influences. Mirror polystyrene has a weight that is three times less than glass. This material also benefits from impact resistance. It is also much easier to handle (cut, drill), which allows you to use polystyrene to perform unusual design solutions. But against mechanical damage, it is less stable: it is easily scratched, the amalgam can peel off with careless handling.

Mirror panel on a self-adhesive basis can have a variety of thicknesses and shapes (rectangular, square). It is produced both in the form of separate small-sized plates, and in the form of rolls. The color may also be different and depends on the type of amalgam deposited. Silver or aluminum spraying gives the panel a silvery color. A golden shade is obtained thanks to a bronze amalgam.

All kinds of modern techniques for decorating the mirror panels themselves are widely used. The most popular are sandblasting of glass, facet (grinding the edge of the mirror at a certain angle), rhinestones, photo printing, stained glass, painting.

Installation

When starting to work with a roll material, it must be completely unwound and put on the floor until fully straightened. The use of any goods for this purpose is undesirable, so as not to spoil the appearance of the product. Mirror panel on a self-adhesive basis is covered with a protective film, which should be removed only after the installation.

A mirror coating is applied to the prepared, level surface, which must first be thoroughly cleaned of the old coating, dust, oil stains and other various contaminants. The panels are pressed very tightly against the surface to avoid the appearance of the smallest bubbles. It should be taken into account the possible compression and expansion of the material from the effects of different temperatures and leave a small gap between the plates (not less than 0.5 mm).

What to look for when choosing

Despite its undeniable advantages, mirror panels on a self-adhesive basis (their photos are placed in this article) - the material is rather capricious. Therefore, when buying, pay attention to the integrity of the package, since any damage to it can affect the condition of the product.

The strength of the panel depends directly on the number of stiffeners. The main thing is that they do not appear on the surface - in this case, it is better to refuse the purchase. Also, do not take the panel with poorly painted areas, dirty back side. It is recommended and check the plane to avoid the purchase of defective products.
