Kinoveevskoe cemetery in St. Petersburg: how to get there, address and phone number of the administration

This object of urban infrastructure of the northern capital does not belong to the category of widely known. Even not all native Petrograders can tell the visitor how to find in the shortest possible way what is indicated on the detailed maps of the city as "Cinema Cemetery of St. Petersburg". Nevertheless, there is a necropolis with such a name in the city on the Neva, and it deserves no less attention than all the others.

From St. Petersburg history

The name Kinoveevskoe cemetery received the name of the monastery, once located in the area of Malaya Okhta. The toponym of Greek origin also means something like "common life". Such was the order in the monastery on Okhta, all its inhabitants, upon entering the holy abode, gave her all their possessions and lived as a single community. The monastery, otherwise known as the "kinoveya", was the suburban department of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. There is no monastery for a long time, but Kinoveevskoe cemetery, once it was with him, exists to this day. The same name was worn by the prospectus, which was passing near the cemetery. In the middle of the twentieth century, it was renamed and incorporated into another highway.

We can assume that in those days when St. Petersburg was the capital of the Russian Empire, it was easy enough to answer the question: "Kinoveevskoe cemetery ... How to get to it?" To look for a graveyard followed, of course, on Kinoveevsky Avenue. Arbitrary change of historical toponyms by authorities often leads to difficulties in orienting among city streets.

From the history of the churchyard

The date of the founding of the necropolis is 1848, when next to the Church of All Saints that existed on the territory of Kinovei, local monks began to bury. For almost the entire nineteenth century Kinoveevskoe cemetery was considered a country cemetery, and relatively few burials were made on it. Noteworthy is the social composition of those who happened to be buried on it. For the most part, these are people who are small and not famous. Mostly - peasants from the Okhta coast. To the number of prestigious and aristocratic this necropolis could not be attributed.

In the summer of 1862, the five-domed Trinity Cathedral was laid in the cemetery. Subsequently, nearby it began to burial people of spiritual and merchant ranks. At the beginning of the Soviet historical era, the existence of Kinovei, which gave the name of the churchyard, ceased to exist. In 1942, grave sites appeared in the cemetery , in which warriors who died in hospitals during the defense of Leningrad, and ordinary residents of the besieged city who were killed by hunger, from artillery shelling and bombing were buried.

Kinoveevskoe cemetery today

The modern territory of the necropolis, founded in the middle of the century before last, is not much more than sixteen hectares. Kinoveevskoe cemetery is located between two lively city highways - the Far East Avenue and the Oktyabrskaya Embankment. It borders directly with the streets of Mginskaya, Samoylova and the embankment of the Volkovka River. The architectural background of the historic churchyard is modern industrial buildings. Of the buildings of the nineteenth century, only a few buildings have been preserved, they are located on the side of the embankment.

In the administrative sense, Kinoveevskoe cemetery is a structural subdivision of the St. Petersburg State Treasury Institution "Specialized Service of St. Petersburg for Funeral Affairs." The cemetery is still operational. But here, mainly, related graves and burials of urns with ashes to the grave or to the wall of the columbarium are produced here. The reserve of free areas in the cemetery is almost exhausted, and there is no prospect of its expansion.

Reconstruction of the cemetery

Work on the reconstruction of the economic infrastructure, re-planning and expansion of the cemetery territory was carried out several times during its history. In 1946, a memorial was erected on the site of the mass graves of the wartime. It is made in the form of a black pillar-obelisk. In 1964, on the territory of the fifth section of the Kinoveevsky cemetery, the so-called "Communist platform" was decorated, where the burials of old Bolsheviks and party functionaries of the Soviet era are located.

The largest reconstruction of the necropolis took place in the late eighties of the twentieth century. On the territory there were modern administrative and economic buildings, hard coverings were made on all central alleys, landscaping works were carried out and lighting structures were installed. Not far from the central avenue a memorial was erected to the zenith calculation, which died in 1943 when a German aircraft attack on the Finnish railway bridge was repelled. After completion of the reconstruction works, Kinoveevskoe cemetery acquired a form that corresponds to the architectural standards required for such types of urban infrastructure. The appearance of the necropolis, mainly, defines the burials of the mid-twentieth century.
