How many states on Earth: independent, unrecognized, partially recognized and special territories

The political map is quite dynamic and reflects all the changes in state borders and the influence of large and powerful countries on the world economy. The fundamental stage in the formation of a modern political map was the postwar redistribution of the world, but modern conflicts also exert a noticeable influence on state borders. How many states on Earth are there now? This issue is to some extent unilateral, since apart from independent there are still unrecognized countries, dependent territories and lands with indefinite status.

By the way, all the changes affect people who asked recently: "How much does the rent of land from the state cost?" The price is different. With the change in the citizenship of the territories, there are often problems with private property, which the state owned until recently.

Number of states on a modern political map

The modern political map counts not only independent states, but also territories, the status of which is not so unambiguous. How many states on Earth? Today, the Organization of the United Nations includes 193 countries and two other observer states, which are the Vatican and Palestine. They are also full-fledged subjects of international law, but they do not have the right to vote in the UN. At the same time, all relations of other independent states and organizations are coordinated with the Holy See, and not actually by the city-state of Vatican. Palestine is legally an independent power in the process of creation.

The Vatican (more precisely, the Holy See) has been an observer in the UN since 1964, Palestine has a special status granted in 2012. Until 2002, the neutral state was also an observer state, and Taiwan applied for membership in the UN and granted observer status several times, but without success. Also, the Commonwealth of States has a special status in the UN: the EU, the CIS, the OSCE, LAS and some others.

Territories that are not uniquely identified

How many states on Earth? The answer will be incomplete if you do not take into account the regions that are fighting for their own independence, unrecognized and partially recognized states, micronations, often without even territory, existing only virtually or proclaimed by individuals or groups of people.

The most likely to become subjects of international law at the moment are partially recognized states. Among them:

  • Kosovo in the Balkans (the territory was recognized by 109 states out of 193).

  • Abkhazia.

  • Northern Cyprus (officially recognized exclusively by independent Turkey).

  • The Republic of China (maintains relations with 22 states).

  • South Ossetia in Transcaucasia.

  • Saharan Arab Democratic Republic (recognize SADR 84 countries, 59 maintain diplomatic relations).

South Ossetia and Abkhazia have a special status - the states are recognized by four full-fledged members of the UN, as well as seven unrecognized (or partially recognized) states, including each other.

Unrecognized states and special territories

How many states on Earth are unrecognized entities? There are five such countries: the so-called DPR and LNR, the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), Transnistria and Somaliland in the territory of the former British colony.

In addition, there are two territories that carry out international relations on their own, in fact they are part of New Zealand, as well as two entities with uncertain status. The latter include the Western Sahara, which was supposed to gain independence, but was occupied by Morocco and Mauritania, and Azad Kashmir, a self-governing territory between India, China and Pakistan

Virtual and microstates

The self-proclaimed states, which are not recognized as independent and not subjects of international relations, only declare their statehood, in fact often without even territory. They began to appear at the end of the 20th century, at the moment there are more than 60 such formations. Some of them have rather interesting names. For example, the Kingdom of the Beautiful or Peaceful Land. The founders of such powers are often public organizations (Greenpeace, supporters of the Roman Revival, activists of gay organizations) or famous personalities (John Lennon and Yoko Ono), some formations are based in abandoned objects of the Second World War (Siland) or formed in protest (Vanstonia - Against the construction of the highway M11).

— они просто создали собственное образование и занимаются преимущественно выпуском почтовых марок или памятных монет. The founders of such virtual and micro- countries did not take up the question: "How much does it cost to rent land from the state?" They do not care about the price - they simply created their own education and are mainly engaged in the issue of stamps or commemorative coins. Another state - Virtlandia - is planning to buy out a piece of land and start building statehood, but these hopes are not being implemented yet.

Purchase of land and state

You can buy land for use (or rent a plot) from independent states. The sale of land is carried out by local administrations. To buy, you should write an application and contact the above-mentioned authorities, in case of a positive decision, the land is assessed, all necessary documents are drawn up, and then the buyer pays for the purchase (in installments), after which it becomes the full owner of the site.

How much land does the state have? The price depends on the territory, its size, the state that owns it, the buyer's ownership rights to the buildings located on the site, the purpose of buying, using the land, etc. There are a lot of factors and evaluation criteria. How much does a hundred square meters of land from the state? Rent of land for agricultural purposes in the Krasnodar Territory (Otradnenky district), for example, is from 705 to 950 rubles per year for 1 hectare, in the Moscow region (Sergiev Posad district) - 16 500 rubles per year, and in the Rostov region (Azov District) - 4700 rubles. To specify the cost is necessary in local government.
