Kensington lock for laptop

Security and reliable information protection has been of concern to people since the invention of writing. But if earlier it was necessary to take care of reliable storage of paper documents, now everything is much more complicated. Thousands of pages of documents can be stored on a small flash drive, and contacts and work information are stored on the laptop's disk. Mobility is very convenient, but it has one unpleasant effect: it's easy to lose a mobile device, and it's not always due to forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Crime, unfortunately, has not been canceled. And if the contents of personal notebooks are unlikely to lead to the emergence of a worldwide apocalypse, then at least the loss of time and nerves is guaranteed.

Tie up your laptop

To prevent laptop theft, there is a convenient tool called Kensington lock. What is it and how to use it? The device is a small-sized lock with a key, to which is attached a cord made of high-strength materials. The end of the cord is a loop with which you can fasten the cord around a solid and stationary object, such as a table leg, a pipe or a small table. The lock is in turn inserted into a special hole on the laptop - K-Slot. In addition to the key, there are code locks that can be opened with a digital combination.

Of course, the Kensington lock will not protect the snapping of the cord with powerful nippers, and the K-Slot slot is just a plastic hole on the body that can be torn out with meat. But from the robbers passing by, grabbing everything that lies badly, and office thieves will protect quite reliably. There are models of laptops with a reinforced K-Slot, located on a special chassis or locks inserted into peripheral connectors (VGA, LPT).

No reception against BIG

Due to the high quality of locks and cords made of extra strong materials, Kensington lock has become almost the world's safety standard. And suddenly it turns out that the usual ballpoint pen BIG opens it without any problems! This became possible due to the coincidence of the diameters of its butt and the keyhole.

The handle body is made of pliable plastic, allowing to lock the lock pins, and at the same time has sufficient strength to crank them. Everything turned out to be simple. Attached, strongly pressed, a neat twist - and the lock is opened easily and quickly.

Intrigued by this circumstance, security experts decided to test other protection devices, not just Kensington Castle. Is this a manufacturing defect or is everything very bad in the computer security industry? The test results were disappointing and showed that most computer locks with a key open easily and without any special tools. Therefore, when buying a lock, you should choose a model with a digital code.

The story was widely publicized and forced the company to modernize the equipment and increase the strength and secrecy of the castle. But now all the companies that make the Kensington Castle and its analogues began to honestly warn customers about the possible opening of the castle by professional kidnappers.

Additional protection

Kensington Castle protects itself from theft itself, but not the information in it. Therefore, in case it does happen, we recommend installing special software to search for the laptop and protect its contents. It can be programs of remote blocking and destruction of information or a hidden photograph of a robber and sending photos to the desired E-mail.
