How to troubleshoot a critical error in Windows Kernel Power, Event ID 41

Undoubtedly, many are familiar with the situation when, for example, in the process of passing a modern game or launching a heavy application, the system fails, and the critical one (Kernel-Power (event code 41, 63rd category)). In some cases, the so-called "blue screen of death" may appear, sometimes the computer just hangs and does not react to anything, sometimes the message appears on a black background. Let's try to figure out what this is connected with.

Kernel-Power error (event code 41): general information

To begin, perhaps, it is necessary to describe the failure itself. If we start from the translation of this term from English, it can be described as a power error of the Windows kernel. Without special knowledge, this, however, is quite difficult to understand. We will confine ourselves to the fact that event code 41 (Kernel-Power), category 63, indicates that the system is unable to handle too many requests for processing complex operations, for example, floating-point calculations. This, by the way, confirms the hanging of modern resource-intensive games, which are based on such platforms.

On the other hand, such a failure does not explain even the "microsoft" source. Kernel-Power (event code 41) as a failure can occur for a variety of reasons. This is already enthusiasts of their business literally dug up to possible symptoms. What is most sad, they vary so much that it is not the easiest thing to find out the actual cause of the failure. In addition, you can find an indication of such a malfunction only in reports (no visual confirmation is given).

There is no cause of illness - no medicine?

After the computer or laptop ceases to respond to user manipulations, only the full Reset (reset) helps, but also only by long pressing and holding the power button. By the way, it is by no means a fact that after this the system will work fine. Some time - maybe, but then the repeated occurrence of a Kernel-Power error (event code 41) is absolutely not excluded. And, judging by the fact that even Microsoft experts can not name the true cause of the failure, many users find it impossible to determine its true nature. So what to do in this case?

Separately, it should be said that reinstalling Windows does not help. So from here you can make the only possible conclusion: the conflict is at the level of "hardware", the system and installed software. However, in the case of programs or games, the explanation of the failure by the fact that the hardware just does not meet the recommended system requirements seems quite logical. However, despite the absence of official transcripts, as is customary for most Windows errors, several options for therapy do exist. Well, first, you should check whether all the loops are tight, and secondly, the power supply (if any) can simply "not pull" the load, causing voltage surges. But now it's not about that.

Critical error Kernel-Power (event code 41): configure the BIOS

The most common failure occurs when the processor overheats. This can be observed in two cases: either a load is applied to it, for which it is not calculated in the program plan (resource-intensive games), or it was simply overclocked.

To begin with, if a Kernel-Power problem occurs, event code 41 (Windows 7, for example), you should look at the characteristics of the CPU and in the BIOS change all the overclocked parameters corresponding to the overclocking (we are not talking about physical overclocking right now). An ordinary user, in order not to dig into the settings, and without special knowledge, it is easiest to reset the settings to factory settings.

As a rule, in any BIOS there is a option Load BIOS Setup Defaults or something like that. Do not like the software way?

In stationary computers on the motherboard, you can take out the battery for a few minutes or change the Clear CMOS jumper from the "1-2" position to the "2-3" second by 15, then return everything to its proper place. As already understood, the settings will be reset. However, with a weak processor (especially with its physical overclocking) this can not always help. Yes, and note: this method is suitable only for stationary computers. For laptops, it is absolutely unacceptable.

CPU Test

In case the Kernel-Power kernel error, event code 41 (Windows 8 for example) occurs again, the CPU itself will have to be checked.

In the simplest version, you can use the free utility Everest or something like that. True, it only tests the "iron" components, and certainly does not restore the initial or optimal values of the parameters. But, at least, at least it will be known how much such a malfunction can be associated with overheating of the processor.

In general, it is best to use the so-called Prime95 test, where you first need to select the Just Stress Testing mode, and the Torture Test ... options in the In-place large FFTs mode.

Problems with memory

Unfortunately, the option is also not excluded, when a failure, denoted as Kernel-Power (event code 41), occurs when the operating memory is malfunctioning.

In this situation, you can first use the standard "checkout" checker, which is present in any Windows-system. You can access it, for example, by entering the corresponding query in the search field of the Start menu or by entering the mdsched command in the Run menu, and then selecting the desired action (reboot with test or test the next time the system boots). Please note: in both cases, the utility should be started on behalf of the administrator, and if necessary, enter the password, if one was installed.

On the other hand, the test can do nothing critical and not reveal, and the user will again receive a Kernel-Power error (41). What to do in this situation? It's simple - you just need to take out the memory slots one by one, then reboot the system and see how stable it is. Perhaps the problem is in the newly installed slats or simply in the discrepancy between them. Again, this can be done on stationary computer terminals.

Problems with hard drives

Another situation related to this failure is that not all hard drives are "friends" with 64-bit "operating systems", starting with Windows 7. In particular, this is seen behind the hard disks of Seagate.

In this case, it is recommended to use utilities like HDD Life or HDD Health and look at the test results. In some cases, it may be necessary to update the firmware of the hard drive, although this is very rare. If testing shows that there are problems with the "screw", you will either have to carry it out for repair, or, alas, install a new one.

In extreme cases, you can try the software package HDD Regenerator, which, according to the developers, is able not only to recover the damaged sectors, but even to remagnetize any type of hard disks. However, there is no complete confidence in the restoration of their working capacity, so use this utility at your own peril and risk.

Problems with audio or video cards

No less common problem, surprising as it may sound, is the installation of two audio or video chips, between which there is a conflict on both the physical and the software level.

As for the correction of the situation, you can simply temporarily remove one of them, and then see how the system as a whole will behave.

Update drivers for network cards

Another common situation when the Kernel-Power fails (event code 41), according to experts, is the presence in the system of incorrectly installed or obsolete drivers for network cards.

As already understood, they must either be removed first, then reinstalled, or simply updated. For the upgrade, the standard system tool or even the free version of the Driver Booster utility, which is capable of performing all the actions in automatic mode for a few minutes, is perfect. If you do not have an Internet connection, you will need to download the latest drivers from another computer, and then install them manually.

Required to enable Windows updates

Finally, many experts who conducted studies of this failure agree that it is mandatory to include automatic updating of the system. This can solve many problems associated with the system part, since updates on the hardware segment are practically not affected (with rare exceptions in the form of updating specific drivers).

To do this, simply select the appropriate mode in the Windows Update Center. It is advisable to use full automation, without using download and offer for installation. Let the system itself find the best, and install everything that it needs. If the problem is fixed, over time (if someone does not like it), automatic updating can be disabled.

Conclusion

As can be seen from all of the above, the Kernel-Power problem is quite serious, and it is not so easy to solve it (especially since no official explanation is given on this matter). So in most cases, users will have to identify the source of the failure themselves, although it is better to immediately use the services of specialists or service centers.

Nevertheless, it seems, even such simple advice in finding the source of the problem can sometimes help to find the right solution for its elimination, especially since nothing particularly complicated in them.
