Is it possible to prevent antifreeze of different colors? To pick up antifreeze on car brand

Almost all experienced owners can easily advise about the vehicle. But, despite this, the question of whether antifreeze of different colors can be prevented remains always relevant for beginners. Gone are the days when water was poured into the car. Therefore, every self-respecting car owner is obliged to understand what antifreeze is, whether red, green, blue mixes together and why this liquid is needed at all.

What is antifreeze

When the engine is running in a car, a huge amount of heat is generated. For the purpose of cooling, a radiator was invented, which is a kind of heat exchanger. The process of cooling the engine is by liquid. In its role can act ordinary water or special compounds - antifreeze. From the name of the latter it is clear that this is a non-freezing liquid. It is made on the basis of water with the addition of technical alcohol and additives.

The main quality for which antifreeze is valued is the low freezing point. So, the concentrate should be diluted with distilled water. Before mixing, the freezing point is equal to eighty degrees Celsius. For example, the mixture will turn into ice at -40 ° if you connect one to one water and antifreeze concentrate (red). The price of the latter, by the way, is an order of magnitude higher than that of the finished diluted refrigerant.

It should also be noted that the antifreeze dilates less than water when it freezes. This is a huge plus for forgetful car owners. For example, you did not have time to drain antifreeze from the radiator, and the weather was pleased with a very cold frost at minus fifty. Water, frozen, would increase in volume by nine percent. And the antifreeze has increased only in one and a half time, having reduced breakages to a minimum.

Accordingly, the boiling point of the cooling liquids is much higher than that of water. So, in the latter it fluctuates within a hundred and twenty degrees. The antifreeze concentrate has a boiling point equal to 197 ° (it will go down when mixed with water). Therefore, do not forget to fill it in winter and summer. After all, every driver saw how cars "boiled" on the road.

Types of antifreeze

In the car store first of all, the color of the antifreeze will come to the fore. Red, green, blue and even yellow - almost all the spectra of the rainbow. Which of them is necessary for you - it is worth investigating. Knowing the species will give you an answer to the question of whether antifreeze of different colors can interfere.

Depending on the composition, the cooling fluids are divided into means:

  • With a salt base (colors: blue, green);
  • With acidic (red).

The color of antifreeze manufacturer changes to ensure that car owners do not confuse them. Each manufacturer makes the color on his own. However, there is a classic version of the antifreeze paint, which is adhered to by most manufacturers.

Color of cooling liquids:

  • TL is blue. It is the closest to all in composition with the antifreeze.
  • G11 - green, blue or blue-green.
  • G12, G12 +, G12 ++ - red and all its shades to purple.
  • G13 - yellow, purple and so on, it is worth noting that this type of antifreeze is painted in all colors of the rainbow.

What is common for all antifreezes

It is worth starting with the fact that the composition of all cooling liquids is approximately eighty percent the same. It is distilled water and technical alcohol. And on the question of whether it is possible to prevent antifreeze of different colors, I would like to respond positively, but what about the remaining twenty percent? And these are additives that determine the behavior of the coolant in a given situation.

Thus, if you mix, for example, antifreeze blue with green, then eighty percent they will be the same.

What's different

As already mentioned, all coolants are distinguished among themselves by additives. That is, they are combined with distilled water and industrial alcohol. Additives are primarily necessary in order to eliminate the negative effects of the main components. After all, water and ethylene glycol, combined, are a powerful destroyer for metal surfaces.

Conventionally, additives can be divided into two groups:

  • Protective. These additives inside the metal parts form a thin film that does not allow them to subsequently break down. More commonly used in G11.
  • Anticorrosive. The process of this additive is very interesting. This antifreeze does not form any protective film. But as soon as there is a rust foci, it is immediately blocked by additives, which will not allow it to spread. Used in G12 and G12 +.

In fairness, we should mention G13 with hybrid additives. In principle, already from the name it becomes clear that this species is a combination of two effects: anticorrosive and protective.

And so, answering the question about whether it is possible to interfere with antifreeze of different colors, we already understand that its shades do not matter. Always pay attention to the additives that make up the coolant.

How to choose an antifreeze for a car brand

When replacing the antifreeze in the first place, you need to look at the technical characteristics of your vehicle and the specification for the admission. The latter have their code, which will also be indicated on the tank with antifreeze. Proceeding from this, it is possible to pick up an antifreeze on a car brand.

There is a conditional table of a selection of a cooling liquid depending on year of release of a vehicle.

Antifreeze selection by car date

eleven

Release until 1996.

12

Auto 1996-2001 of the release.

12+

Release since 2001.

13

In sports and cars used in extreme conditions

We remind you that the table is conditional, therefore, it is possible to correctly select OX only in accordance with the specified specification for the admission.

Under what conditions should any antifreeze be poured?

Replacing the cooling, as well as other consumable fluids for the car, is a seasonal occupation: associated with the repair or renovation of the radiator and cooling system. Also, auto mechanics recommend to change the antifreeze after buying a used car. And before this event, the question arises as to what kind of situations it is better to fill with antifreeze.

As already mentioned, depending on the additives used in cooling liquids, they are divided into G11, G12, G13. The choice is small, but it is.

Antifreezes of class G11 are considered the cheapest. They contain a minimal amount of additives. Roughly speaking, the liquid is identical to our domestic antifreeze.

Antifreeze class G12 - the exact opposite of G11 in value. They are one of the most expensive cooling liquids. This high price has a logical explanation. These antifreezes have excellent anti-corrosion properties and heat-transfer capabilities.

Antifreezes G13 represent the most harmless cooling liquid. It is not poisonous and at the same time combines all the positive qualities of the two previous types of antifreeze. Therefore, most manufacturers of our time prefer such liquids.

Is it possible to mix antifreeze from different manufacturers and colors

It happens that you need to go on a long trip, in the radiator coolant as a cat cried, and you did not have time to buy a new one. And now the savior-neighbor in the garage can borrow, but it's different in color. What antifreeze can I add?

The choice of coolant determines its chemical composition and the presence of additives. Accordingly, in order to add antifreeze, you need the same one that is now in the car. Color of a cooling liquid here absolutely at anything, as it only the dye, not having with the maintenance of an antifreeze any interrelation. This compliance is required in order to save your vehicle, because the additives have an aggressive reaction to each other. Unfortunately, it does not appear immediately, but only after a while.

What happens if you mix different refrigerants

If you have added antifreeze of another composition and color to the cooling system in order to reach the house, and on arrival at the place this mixture was removed, replacing it with the necessary one, then there will be no negative impact. But the operation of the car in this way for a long time will not go unnoticed for your radiator.

Currently, manufacturers of cooling liquids began to produce similar in content antifreeze. Therefore, when replacing or topping, pay attention to the composition first. It is supposed, that the maintenance of additives at a cooling liquid same, and colors differ. At the same time, the same color does not give you a guarantee of the possibility of complementarity of one another because of the different composition.

Advice

Do not forget that every manufacturer has the right to give his antifreeze any color, not paying attention to its type. Therefore, the question as to which antifreeze colors can be mixed is set by a beginner only.

Do not choose a coolant for the cost and color. For example, the antifreeze concentrate red (the price of which is from 200 rubles and higher per liter) for different manufacturers can have different additives in the composition. And it, as you know, is fraught with bad work, sometimes serious breakdowns of your car.

It should be remembered that in the sale of antifreeze is available in the form of concentrate and liquid, already prepared for use. First, before you pour into the car, you will need to dilute with distilled water, and the second, as you already understood, does not need to mix. Which one to choose, it is up to you to decide purely on the basis of practicality.
