Hypotensive preparation "Raunatin" - instructions for use

The formulation of the preparation "Raunatin" describes the instruction as a combination of alkaloids derived from the roots of Rauwolfia serpentina or the cortex of Rauwolfia vomitoria. These plants are a family of cottagers, growing in South and South-East Asia, many centuries used in folk medicine. Their extracts have sedative and hypotensive (lowering blood pressure) properties. In addition, the decoctions of the roots of Rauvolfi are used for intestinal diseases, including cholera and dysentery, as well as for insect bites, scorpions, snakes and as a vomiting agent.

Official medicine uses both drugs, which include one of the alkaloids Rauwolfia (reserpine), and medicines containing a mixture of alkaloids - raunatin, which includes, in addition to reserpine, serpentine, aymalin, etc. Compared with a pure reserpine, raunatin slowly reduces arterial Pressure and has less pronounced sedative effect. However, it is often tolerated better than reserpine, in addition, raunatin (instructions for use indicate this), in addition to the listed properties, effectively fights with cardiac arrhythmia. Reserpine, whose sedative effect is more pronounced, in addition to hypertension, is shown in psychoses accompanied by high blood pressure, as well as in mental disorders of vascular origin (vascular psychosis, dementia, etc.). In hypertensive disease I and II degree, accompanied by heart rhythm disturbances, raunatin is usually prescribed - its application in this case is more justified.

Raunatin is available in tablets, each containing 0.002 g of alkaloids. In addition, they contain auxiliary substances: glucose, corn starch, calcium stearate, etc. The dosage regimen of the preparation "Raunatin" instructions for use describes as follows: the initial dose is one tablet (in the evening). Their number is increased one by one a day, gradually bringing it to five or six. After achieving a stable therapeutic effect, the dose of the drug is also gradually reduced to one or two tablets per day. Usually the course of treatment with the drug "Raunatin" - the instruction for use indicates this - is about three to four weeks. Further, he, at the discretion of the doctor, can be prescribed in the minimum dose (one tablet per day) for a long period.

The preparation "Raunatin" has an extensive list of contraindications. This is primarily hypersensitivity to alkaloids, depression, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, low blood pressure, coronary insufficiency, organic damage to the heart muscle, as well as bronchial asthma. This drug is contraindicated both to those who suffer from peptic ulcer disease and those diagnosed with nephrosclerosis. In pregnancy and lactation it is not prescribed, since reserpine enters the breast milk and penetrates the placental barrier. Raunatin should not be used to treat children under 18 years of age.

Care should be taken when taking this medication and in no case should it exceed the dose prescribed by the doctor. Overdose of the drug "Raunatin" (instructions for use draws special attention to this) is dangerous to health. It leads to drowsiness and depression, and in severe situations - to loss of consciousness and coma. In this case, the patient needs urgent medical attention.

Like practically any drug, Raunatin has both supporters and opponents, including among practicing physicians. Some of them consider this drug obsolete and ineffective, besides, unsafe for health. Nevertheless, Raunatin is still released in pharmacies without a prescription, and many argue that this drug helps alleviate the symptoms of hypertension more effectively than other, more modern means.
