Hanja is a hypocrite

The word "hypocrite" is the converted word "chadzy" (haji) that came to us from the Turkish language . The title of "hodge" was awarded to a person who made a pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina - sacred to all Muslims of the city. Returning from a distant voyage of piety, this pilgrim had the right to wear a white turban - as a sign that he was approaching the holy stone of the Kaaba. Since such people were universally respected in the Islamic world, many wanted to enroll in the Haji not to get into the holy land, but for the sake of honors, which they will be sprinkled by compatriots upon their return.

In the Russian language, the word "hypocritical" was initially negative. So the Turks called people who identified excessive piety, over-moralized, taught how others live, but in actual fact proved to be very far from the ideals of the professed religion. The moral and morality brothels sometimes turned out to be debaucheries and pedophiles, who expressed themselves in the style of extreme puritanism and rigorism lived in luxury and excess.

But the Turks were not the first to discover that piety is feigned. In the Gospels there are many testimonies of those who "pretend to pray for a long time," so that people see it, and those who "see a knot in their neighbor's eye and do not notice logs in their eyes." Such "pious" Jesus Christ called "Pharisees", and proclaimed: "Woe to you!", As they purify the outside, and inside are full of malice and lawlessness. But the "Pharisee" - the former meaning of the word prude, was also not originally a synonym for hypocrisy. It was a class of especially devout, knowledgeable Torah and Talmud rabbis, "scribes." They taught in the synagogues, like the Levites.

In English, a bigot is a bigot, in German - Scheinheiligkeit. As you can see, nothing from the Turkish hodji or the evangelical Pharisee. However, in German there is an indication of religious hypocrisy, false holiness. For a long time, the term "empty consecration" was used in Russia, but later it became archaic, and it is known why: hypocrisy went beyond the plane of religion and moved to the sphere of respectability, mores, in a word, into the sphere of secular ethics.

If we analyze literary works with hypocritical characters (Tartuf Moliere, Maupassant's Life, Kuprin's Khanzhushka, Ostrovsky's Ostrovsky's Thunder and other works of the New Time, we'll see that a prude is a completely secular person claiming the title The guardian of the purest Puritan customs and the standard of morality and morality.

Interestingly, in the Western and American tradition, the word bigot is inextricably associated with racism and rejection of same-sex marriages. So in the conditions of "politically correct society" the term "hypocrite" was transformed: this is the person who, with foam at the mouth, will prove that he is not a racist and respects the rights of gays and lesbians, whereas he will rather kill his daughter than allow her to marry Black or to marry a girl. American society knows a lot of rigorists who advocate that the words "Negro" be censored from the "Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and ban the play "The Merchant of Venice" by Shakespeare, because there is found the politically incorrect word "Jew", and in actual fact refer to black people And Jews with contempt and dislike.
